Incomplete cast copper alloy escutcheon from a vessel of the Roman or Medieval period.
The object is sub-circular in plan and the outward face is slightly convex. The top edge has broken off but presumably would have formed a hook or suspension loop to take a handle. The concave underside has traces of soldering.

Iron Roman Escutcheon with a circular ring with small moulded head ornamentation beneath the ring. It would have been soldered to the sides of a metal bowl. Many examples from this period are decorated with the face of an ox but this example has possibly a human face. It has a hollow back and 3 lobed plate. There were usually 3 or 4 on a bowl. Late Roman vessels often have round openwork escutcheons from the late 4th and early 5th centuries.
