Description: Two fragments of a large silver and silver gilt dish dating to the late Roman period. The smaller fragment is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and curves slightly, though is rather distorted through post-depositional damage. One edge has been heavily gilded, the other apparently demonstrating a soldered-on strip with a central groove that has also been gilded. The second (larger) fragment is broadly hemispherical, curving strongly in plan and consisting two strips partly connected via an inner soldered section (though the outer section only partially survives). As with the…

Two fragments, a rim and body sherd, of a ceramic Samian ware dish with an everted rim with raised foliate mouldings. The bowl would have been wheel thrown within a mould with these decorative motifs impressed into it. The scroll like trails are part of leaf motif and the surface slip has been removed so that they look lighter and have been worn almost flat. The slip survives well on both sherds, giving the fine red fabric an added shine, as well as protecting it from wear. The body sherd is plain and curves slightly in profile so that it is probably from the base of a shallow dish as…

One abraded rim sherd from a Roman plain rim dish in Black burnished ware, category 1 (BB1) from South Dorset. It is sub-rectangular in plan and curved in profile. It has a dark-coloured outer surface, showing traces of burnishing, and a slightly lighter inner core. It features micaceous inclusions that are well sorted. The curvature of the sherd at the rim suggests an original rim diameter of c. 160mm.

A small abraded rim sherd from Roman plain rim dish made in sandy greyware. It has a medium grey fabric with abundant fine sand temper with small stone inclusions. The rim is plain with a slight indented line running around the outer side just below. Estimated external diameter at rim c. 200mm, although this is a tentative approximation given the small size of the sherd.

The two sherds are rim fragments from two different vessels, possibly dishes. The ware is oxidised ware, with orange coloured surfaces with a mid grey coloured core. The fabric is quite soft. Both sherds have frequent, rounded, white quartz-like inclusions. The rim is a ā€˜nā€™ shape in profile, with almost vertical, straight walls. Below the rim on the exterior surface there is a horizontal groove as decoration. The ware may be Severn Valley Ware, therefore dating to the Roman period. They are slightly abraded and weigh 33.4g.
