An incomplete Roman boxwood double-sided comb dating from AD 50-410. The one-piece comb has been formed from a single piece of boxwood. The comb is a double-sided 'H' format with teeth on both sides of a central reserve. The comb is lentoid shaped in section with a set of coarse teeth on one side of the central reserve and a set of fine teeth on the other. The side with the finer spaced teeth (8 per cm) 69 teeth in total, was primarily used as a 'nit' comb whilst the other side with the broader spaced teeth (5 per cm) 43 teeth in total, was used for general grooming. The central reser…

Very small copper alloy comb fragment, possibly dating from the Roman or medieval periods. The surviving fragment is the central metal bit of a composite comb, that means that the handle would have been made from an organic material such as bone or wood whilst the central bit with spikes/teeth was made from a more durable material such as copper alloy. The handle would have been held in position with small copper alloy rivets, one of which is still in place and visible on the fragment. There is no moulded or incised decoration on the fragment, but it would have been unlikely for any d…

A possible cast copper alloy tile comb of probable Roman date (43-410 AD). The comb consists of the handle and the comb. It is sub-circular in cross section. The comb is of a fishtail shape, with slight shoulders on either side, with the comb edge set at right angles to the handle; the cross section is sub-rectangular. A fragment of a copper-alloy comb, probably dating from the Roman to Medieval periods. Parts of approximately ten teeth survive; all are of rectangular section and extend downwards, forming an angle of 90 degrees with the above 'bar', tapering towards their lower ends. The aforementioned bar is clearly broken at one end, but the outer end appears to be original. A line of four ring-and-dot punchmarks decorates each side of the bar. A curved, perforated projection extends upwards from the top edge of the bar, its form suggesting that the comb once had semicircular handle. Length:…

A cast copper alloy probable tile comb. In plan the comb has a vertical arm which is the handle and a cross bar at the base which has the teeth for the comb. The handle is sub-rectangular in section with rounded corners and is of varying widths which swells towards the upper edge. In plan the handle is slightly curved to one side and this is probably not intentional, but may have occurred during use. The upper edge is broken, and it does not appear to be broken recently. Below the break there is moulded decoration with three transverse ribs. The opposite terminal has an integral cross …

Although damaged, the preservation of this bone Roman comb is extraordinary given that it was discovered on the surface of a ploughed field. The composite comb is double sided, and although all of the teeth are broken, it is possible to see how they are thicker on one row than on the other. The remaining end plate of the comb is elaborately carved with curved decoration, giving it the appearance of a pair of spread wings. Two circular perforations in the centre of the end plate may have been designed for suspension. The end plate is also decorated on both sides with incised ring and do…

The majority of the handle and a small portion of the comb remain of the item. The upper terminal of the handle is broken, this is not a recent break. The handle is oval in section, and decorated with three high-relief bands approximately a third of its length down. The handle continues below the decoration swelling slightly before tapering a little. The handle is curved, particularly the lower portion. The lower portion of the handle forms an inverted 'T' shape. However the horizontal portion, the comb, is shortened and both terminals are broken, not recently. The comb is -sub-triangu…

The comb is shaped like a rake. The handle is a solid rod which is oval shape in section. The upper terminal of the handle is broken completely and is an old break. The handle is then bent at c. 110°. This bend does not appear intentional as there is a large crack across the apex of the bend. The lower portion of the handle has two bulbous mouldings below which the comb component is positioned. The comb component is a sub-triangular shape with the two oblique edges being convex, i.e. a tau cross shape. The horizontal edge has vertical indentations along the edge, which are alternate p…
