Nummus of the House of Constantine (306-361), probably irregular or hybrid [i.e. part of an official obverse die for a larger coin appears to occupy the entire diminutive flan, while the reverse incorporates part of the soldier’s body {armour?}] Fallen Horseman issue of 355-361, Reece period 18. Obverse description: head laureate right, large eye. Reverse description: possibly soldier advancing left spearing fallen horseman. Copper alloy sestertius of Julia Mamaea, dating to AD 222-35 (Reece Period 11) with obverse IVLIA MAMAEA (AVGVSTA), diademed and draped bust right. Mint of Rome. It is 26mm in diameter and 2.5mm thick. Set into a rectangular lead piece with dimensions 55mm by 45mm with a thickness of 5 to 9mm.  The total weight is 207g. There is possibly another bent disc on the top edge, to the left-hand side. The function of the piece remains a mystery.

A lead discoidal artefact, possibly a cast copy of a Roman nummus dating from AD 364 - 410. It is 14mm in diameter and 4mm thick. It weighs 5.29g. One face is flat and the other is slightly convex. Both are exceedingly worn. If it is a copy of a Roman coin, it is possibly imitating a nummus of the House of Valentinian, dating from AD 364-375, Gloria Romanorum reverse type (Reece Period 19). There is a possible bust right on the obverse, the rounder face. The reverse possible shows the Emperor with standard dragging a captive right with the letters RO visible from the inscription …

This is one of three lead radiates found in close proximity, suggesting a forger's workshop - see WMID-6CA246 and WMID-1EBA70. This coin has been kindly donated to the British Museum, along with WMID-1EBA70, by Mr Steve Wright and the landowner, Mrs K Dill.
