Copper alloy hooked clasp fragment. A small blunt backward-bent cast hook at the end of a probably triangular plate whose edges are lightly crimped as they approach the hook. Most of the plate is lost. A pale even surface patina may associate this with other objects in similar condition reported from the same location, for which a Roman date is posited. Read's (2008, pages 3-4) Roman period Class A blunt-hooked and eye clasps were used, inter alia, to fasten necklaces. The hook is blunter than those on the triangular clasps assigned a broad early medieval date by the same author. Sugg…

Copper alloy Clasp. Fragment of an oval sheet metal object with a projecting lug at one end; the lug has been folded backwards. A central rectangular slot has been cut in the sheet. Five ring and dot are punched into surface, and the folded lug bears incised cross-hatch decoration. Both the slot, which appears functional, and the decorative detail, appear to have been added to a plainer or reused object. Kate Roe kindly suggests an alternative identification as an improvised girdle hanger, which is apt to the period - this fragment could come from either end of such an obje…
