Two complete copper-alloy bridle bit cheekpieces (side plates), of Roman date (1st century AD). Both side plates are flat, with an irregular shape. They have a circular body, with a central circular perforation or hole. Two loops extend off the body, one is triangular in shape, the other is circular. On one of the artefacts, the triangular loop has spherical knops on each corner. Side plate 1 measures 64.8 mm in length, 47.6 mm wide and 4.4 mm thick. It weighs 34.3 g. The central circular hole has an internal diameter of 11.0 mm. The circular loop has an internal diameter of 6.7…

An element of an iron curb or snaffle bit dating to the Roman period. The object has a length of 101mm, a diameter of 11mm. The looped head has a diameter of 17mm. It weighs 46.7 grams. This object can be compared with an iron curb bit found at Usk (Chapman 2005, 142, no. Ti06) and Manning's Type 2 curb bit (Manning 1985, 68). Horse bits in the Roman period could consist of either a solid bar, or two pivoting links. These jointed bits would consist of two bars, each with a loop at either end; on one (as is the case with BM-1B2EE9) both loops would be on the same plane, whilst on…

County: West Berkshire

A complete but fairly corroded iron snaffle bit. This object comprises two rings, of unequal size, joined together by two linking bars. The larger circular section ring is 46.9mm diameter and 4.7mm thick whilst the smaller, also circular section ring is 39.3mm diameter and 3.9mm thick. The linking bars are 63.4mm and 56.4mm in length and c.7mm thick. Each bar is bent round in a loop at one end to join it to a ring and at the other end to link the bars together. They do not appear to be welded closed. An almost identical example in the Durden Collection, complete with different sized…

An incomplete copper-alloy artefact which is probably part of a Roman harness link (cf. PAS record BH-7A7DD3). The 'U-shaped' projection located at one end probably represents a loop which has been worn through use. The shaft is of sub-circular section and there is a moulded ring, defined by grooves, at the point where it meets the loop. At the opposite end of the shaft is adhering iron corrosion. The artefact measures 36mm long, 20.9mm wide and 15.5mm thick. The weight is 31.61g.

A complete iron snaffle dating from the Roman period or possibly later. The snaffle consists of a mouthpiece of two jointed links fastened to cheekpieces of ring form. The mouthpiece links consist of a bar with a loop at each terminal. On one of the links (length 70.2mm) the loops are orientated at an angle of about 80 degrees from one another. On the second link (length 77.8mm), the angle between the loops is approximately 20 degrees. The snaffle is corroded and has an uneven brown surface. One cheekpiece moves freely within the mouthpiece loop, but the other cheekpiece and the two m…
