An incomplete iron strip binding, possibly dating to the Roman period. The object is rectangular in section, bent at a right angle and broken at one end, the other expanding to a broken ?perforated end. It expands towards one end, and may also have been a leaf-shaped corner strap, although it is broken at both ends, and too corroded to tell. Leaf-shaped corner straps were found on the Milton Keynes chest (Manning et al., 1987, fig. 58), and on fragmentary bindings from Great Chesterford (Manning, 1985, S128) and Sandy (Manning, 1985, S129) all dating to the Roman period. However, they…

A copper alloy knop. It is solid, bun-shaped, and has a narrowed waist which then flares to a reeled ledge. The base is flat and has an iron shank projecting from it. This knop is similar to those seen on the top of late Roman crossbow brooches, but it is more likely to be a mount from a box.

A Roman copper-alloy lion-headed box mount. The mount is circular and hollow-backed and has a projecting head and nose. The flat nose is pierced by a ragged hole to take an iron stud. Whiskers on the nose are delineated by curving lines and similar radiating lines define the mane. The eyes are formed by pits with curving lines above and below. Mounts or studs in the form of lion's heads are well know. They would have originally be attached to decorative wooden cremation caskets, such as examples noted in Essex (ESS-1AAD74) and at Skeleton Green (Partridge, 1981: pp. 312-316). Their…

Container for hoard IARCH-ECCBBD Robertson 2000, 165-166 no. 717: ""The hoard was discovered on the site of a Romano-British village during gravel-digging in the summer of 1958 at Great Chessells..., near Lower Slaughter, Gloucestershire. Below the rough stone paving of the courtyard of a small house a neat rectangular hole was found cut in the gravel to take a wooden box measuring 3 ft. by 1 ft. 6 in., from which bronze knobs, angle brackets and nails were recovered. The size of the box suggests that it may have originally contained many more than the 134 coins discovered and t…

A copper-alloy mount, dating to the second or third century AD. The mount comprises an assymetrical lozengiform body, which is convex in section; at both ends the body extends to two bands of decoration comprising two ribs, separated by a small, waisted collar. Beyond the bands of decoration, there extends a flat circular plate, with a central circular piercing. One of the piercings still contains a small, copper-alloy rivet. The rivet is circular in section with a hammered, flattened head. On the underside of the mount, it is clear that the stem of the rivet tapers and is bent back a…
