Limestone fossil ball. Probably a naturally occurring fossil, possibly a sponge. The regularity of the object which prompted its recovery might equally have encouraged its use as an objet trouve in antiquity. There is, however, no evidence for rtificial working. The probability that this object mighty have been worn by use as a toy in antiquity would probably best be gauged by reference to the detailed record of other archaeological discoveries in the immediate vicinity of its find spot. Suggested date (of putative reuse): Unknown, Roman to Post-Medieval, 43-1800.
