Copper alloy balance fragment. A round-section bar made by rolling sheet metal into a tube which was tapered towards either end. The ends themselves are hammered flat. A slot at the midpoint of the beam receives a long triangular strip by which the balance might be suspended when in use. Now with both ends bent upwards. Such imaginative or improvised use of sheet metal might appear from the Roman period onwards to the Middle Ages. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Medieval, 43-1500 Length (as found): 97mm, Diameter: 3.9mm, Weight: 13.95gms

Steelyard beam fragment. Cast lightly tapered rod of facetted hexagonal oval section with two series of nicks along opposed edges: seven long marks spaced at intervals of c.6mm on one side with a punched dot midway between each pair, and three long marks set 11mm apart on the other. Broken at both ends. Either glossed by wear or recently polished by the finder – the extension of glossing to the ends may hint at the latter. The marks may suggest two scales to use for the adjustment of a suspended steelyard poise or weight, which would travel along the bar. Suggested date: Roman, 43-4…

An incomplete copper alloy arm, probably from a small set of weighing scales. At one end of the arm is a small loop and three raised bands encircling the arm. The main part of the arm is circular in section but then expands to a larger square section. The arm then returns to a circular cross section where it is broken. Unless the arm was much longer there is no clear sign of anywhere for the suspension of the arm and the object might have a different purpose. The date of the object is uncertain. While the loop and raised bands are seen on Roman examples, these are common features of t…

An incomplete, crude cast and engraved copper-alloy hook, possibly form a Roman balance or hanging lamp, c.AD 43-410. Description: The object has a clear hook shape and a rough rectangular cross-section. The hook is angled and bent slightly away from the body of the hook. The bend of the hook is not even and appears to have damaged part of its surface in production. There is an incised line across the body though it is uncertain if this is decorative or from its construction. The opposite end of the hook is incomplete so no suspension loop is visible. It has a dark green patinati…

The hook is blint, though appears broken across its width. The hook widens towards the suspension ends and has a rounded terminal. In this terminal is a suspension loop, it is proceeded by two decorative incised lines as a collar. It has an even dark green patination. Roman copper-alloy probable scale balance arm and suspension loop. The terminal end is decorated in the form of a boar’s head. It is difficult to see how the object would have functioned as a balance arm unless it has been drastically bent downward, perhaps in order to break it. An alternative use may have been as an arm for suspending something else like a lamp or small bowl. Probably dates to between c43 and c410 AD. Length 90mm, width 25mm, height 35mm, weight 64g.

Incomplete copper alloy arm from a Roman steelyard balance. The arm is approximately 6.7mm sub-square in cross-section, and 138.5mm in length with a slight taper (to a nominal 5mm square) and slight curve from end to end. It is not obvious if either end represents a break, but the thickest end steps-down to a short collar before terminating, which is probably where the hanging loops have broken away. One side of the arm has incised calibration markings consisting of vertical graduation lines at approximate 7.9mm intervals. Each segment created by the graduation lines has a centrally p…

Just over half of a probably Roman copper alloy round-sectioned balance arm, slightly bent, and broken (not recently) just beyond the stump of a triangular pointer which would have projected up from the centre point and which is broken (again not recently) through a suspension hole. The surviving terminal is rounded and flattened with a central perforation blocked by corroded iron. Estimated length 148mm (extant length 81mm). Maximum diameter 3.2mm. Mid 1st - 4th century.

Copper alloy balance fragment. A cast round section arm of diameter 4.8mm with a semi-circular cut-out across which it has broken, here interpreted as the site of the central suspension for a scale pan balance. The arm has an ornate terminal comprising a four sided and slightly tapered block adorned on all of its sides with chip carved decoration in two zones, with a central dividing line and a rhomboid or diamond shape with incised inner and outer borders above and below it. At the end of the block is a flattened sub-spherical terminal with four glass beads equidistantly set in it in…

Copper alloy balance arm fragment, as kindly identified by Kevin Leahy, correcting an initial erroneous identification by this reporter. Cast rectangular plate with a U-shaped tab projecting from either long edge and with a circular loop at one end, in all cases with drilled apertures of diameter 2.4mm. The loop at the end of the plate has four incised lines beside it, in the manner of a collar, while a saltire with a horizontal line below it is incised on the central part of the plate where one of the side loops projects. This motif appears casually drawn, though not as casually as a…

A fragment of a Roman copper alloy object, possibly part of a balance arm for a steelyard. The object is cuboid with an iron core, copper alloy cover and tin overlay. There are break edges on both sides of the object and across the bottom the iron appears to be overlapping the copper alloy and tin. There is a hole in the top side which has been filled with iron. Across the top surface there are three lines that run along horizontal across the surface. On the left and right sides there are six vertical lines and two Xs "| | X | | X | | ". A copper-alloy 'omega-shaped' hook from a dual balance dating to the Roman period. The hook comprises a circular-section wire which tapers to each end to pointed terminals and has been bent to form an approximate 'omega' shape. The wire has a length of 34mm, a width of 33mm and a thickness of 2mm. The wire weighs 2.7 grams. For a parallel, see Smither, P. (2017) 'Weighing up the economy of Roman London.' London and Middlesex Archaeological Society Transactions 68, 47, Fig. 10 which depicts a complete example of a dual balance from London. It is suggested that dual balances were use…

An incomplete copper alloy probably Roman balance or steelyard arm. It is formed from a long strip of metal rolled into a circular cross-sectioned tube. It becomes slightly flattened towards one end, culminating in a break, which appears to have been a loop originally. There appears to be a break across the other end too. Just below this break, to one side, is a very small protruding knop. It has a fine green patina. The object seems likely to be a balance arm, possibly of Roman date. It is very similar in form to two examples from Colchester, the former a balance and the latter a …

A copper-alloy object, which appears to have some of the attributes of a toilet scoop, but also those of a small balance. At one end, the object possesses a tongue-shaped plate which is slightly bent back on itself. This plate extends to a rectangular-section stem, which broadens to form a lozengiform area. This lozengiform area accommodates a circular perforation which is slightly off-centre. On the underside of the object, a lentoidal groove, reminiscent of a needle's eye surrounds the perforation. Looped through the perforation is a penannular ring. The ring is circular in section.…
