A fragment of a vessel of Roman date. The fragment is the base of a Samian ware vessel. The base is circular in plan and convex which is a standard feature of such vessels. Only a small amount of the vessel proper remains with most having been broken off. The breaks are very worn. There appears to be a makers stamp on the internal surface of the vessel though this is difficult to identify. The finder believes this example to be from either a Form 37 with curving sides or a Form 30 with vertical sides.

A ceramic rim sherd of a plain Samian Dragendorff type 15/17 platter. (c. AD 43-c. AD 96). The sherd has a plain, almost upright rim, with an internal quarter-round moulding at the junction of the wall and the floor (the floor musing). The surface has been damaged in places, clearly marked where the slip is missing and the lighter fabric is revealed beneath. This vessel is pre-Flavian and was probably made in Central Gaul at Les Martres-de-Veyre (Webster: 1996: 30, ref: 15/17A). Rim sherd of a relatively thin walled coarseware pottery vessel. The sherd either dates to the Roman period (50 - 410) or the medieval period (1200-1500). From what remains it is more likely to be Roman in date and from the local ‘Severn Valley’ like wares, but the style of the rim is unusual being relatively thick and flared, rather than everted as in most Roman vessels. The fabric is relatively soft with a number of angular and sub-angular quartz, grit and ironstone inclusions. The fabric also contains considerable inclusions of mica / sand. The fabric colour is a uniform mid ora…

It has abundant angular fragments of metamorphic rocks, quartz and white and pink feldspar type inclusions. The type may be associated with the wheel thrown Malvernian coarse wares of the 3/4th century AD. There are horizontal striations to the inner surface, indicative of the wheel thrown process.

A rim sherd of a Hampshire Grog-tempered Roman vessel (c. AD 270-c. 410). The everted rim is from a jar and the fabric is an orange buff colour, densely tempered with off-white and mid-brown grog. It is estimated that, when complete, the outer diameter of the rim would have been about 20.0cm. Dr Malcolm Lyne, Roman ceramics specialist, has commented that this type of jar dates c. 270-c. 410 and that Hampshire Grog-tempered ware is handmade and was probably produced on the Island as a successor to Vectis Ware. The breaks are old and abraded. 28.0 x 45.2mm. Weight: 17.02g.
