A ceramic rim sherd of a plain Samian Dragendorff type 15/17 platter. (c. AD 43-c. AD 96). The sherd has a plain, almost upright rim, with an internal quarter-round moulding at the junction of the wall and the floor (the floor musing). The surface has been damaged in places, clearly marked where the slip is missing and the lighter fabric is revealed beneath. This vessel is pre-Flavian and was probably made in Central Gaul at Les Martres-de-Veyre (Webster: 1996: 30, ref: 15/17A). This type of vessel occurred throughout the 1st century, but declined in popularity in the Flavian peri…

Rim sherd of a relatively thin walled coarseware pottery vessel. The sherd either dates to the Roman period (50 - 410) or the medieval period (1200-1500). From what remains it is more likely to be Roman in date and from the local ‘Severn Valley’ like wares, but the style of the rim is unusual being relatively thick and flared, rather than everted as in most Roman vessels. The fabric is relatively soft with a number of angular and sub-angular quartz, grit and ironstone inclusions. The fabric also contains considerable inclusions of mica / sand. The fabric colour is a uniform mid ora…

This is a small pottery beaded rim sherd of Roman origin circa 3rd to 4th Century AD. The outer surface is red/brown morphing to a mid grey core. It has abundant angular fragments of metamorphic rocks, quartz and white and pink feldspar type inclusions. The type may be associated with the wheel thrown Malvernian coarse wares of the 3/4th century AD. There are horizontal striations to the inner surface, indicative of the wheel thrown process.
