Roman pottery vessel base sherd. The frabric is a pale orange, with both the inner and outer surfaces being covered in a black slip. The base of the vessel has a diameter of 30.07mm, the surviving section of body wall is 4.25mm thick. It weighs 16.56 grams. Dr Paul Sealey (Colchester & Ipswich Museum Service) comments: The fabric could well be Colchester ware, in which case it should date c. AD 125-250. Scratched on the exterior of the base are a few symbols. They are not apparently writing (letters) but some sort of anepigraphic doodle.
