A glass rim fragment probably from a Roman prismatic bottle, although from this fragment it is impossible to tell what shaped bottle it was from. The glass is good quality and blue green in colour. The fragment measures 32.47mm in surviving length, 12.17mm in width, weight 5.18g. The rim diameter would have been circa 50mm when complete.

Roman glass vessel: 24 sherds from a conical jug with long neck, open base ring and concave base. This type of vessel dates from the late 1st century to the late 2nd century AD. Not enough of the vessel survives to estimate its height, vessels of the same form usually measure 250-300mm. The vessel is formed from translucent green glass, with small dispursed air bubbles throughout its core. The sherds with the main features are described below. Neck: The neck is circular in cross section. It tapers slightly in thickness towards the mouth, and tapers very slightly at the base before e…

Roman glass vessel: Over 100 sherds of translucent blue-green glass. The exact type of vessel is unknown due to the fragmentary remains of the vessel. Most of the sherds only have a slight curvature and form the main body of the vessel. There are 10 fragments which have a more pronounced curvature, which are either from the base the vessel. Only two of these sherds with pronounced curve fit together to provide a curve from which the diameter can be extrapolated to be approximately 160mm. Some of the smaller sherds may be from another vessel (recorded on this database as ESS-08DD77) how…

Roman glass vessel: 44 sherds from a cylindrical bottle. Common in the last quarter of the first century and went out of use in the early second century, however were reused in creamtions - such as this example. Not enough of the vessel survives to estimate its height, vessels of the same form vary between a height of 150-400mm, with a body diameter of 80-250mm. This vessel is likely to be one of the shorter examples. The surviving sherds weigh approximately 287.32grams. The vessel is formed from translucent blue glass, with small dispursed air bubbles throughout its core. The sherds w…

A glass bead which is possibly Roman. The bead is annular and is D shaped in section with a circular hole in the centre. On one face the centre is depressed, but the other face is flat. A short spur projects from one edge of the bead. The glass contains faint lines that radiate from the spur as if the glass was pulled up to form it, or was poured down from it. The spur narrows from the edge of the bead to the end which is flat and truncated. The bead measures 19.3mm long, 18.1mm wide and 6.4mm thick. The glass is opaque and is very pale blue in colour. Annular beads were popular in th…

Four fragments of Roman vessels, the first three from blue/green bottles. Blue/green bottles were used primarily as containers for storage and transportation, although a range of secondary functions include their use as containers for cremations and as accessory vessels in burials. Blue/green bottles were first produced in the Claudian period but did not become very common until the Flavian period. The most common forms were cylindrical and square although hexagonal and rectangular bottles also occur in smaller numbers. Cylindrical bottles disappeared in the early 2nd century but squa…

a glass bead, of unknown date but possibly Roman. It is a circular light blue opaque glass bead, 21.16mm in diameter, and 9.9mm in height. The hole drilled through the centre is 9.35mm in diameter. The bead weighs 5.33g. Roman sherds have been discovered nearby, SF-890B63, which might suggest a Roman date for this bead.

Base fragment from a mould-blown glass hexagonal bottle in bllue/green glass. Only a small area of the side survives, but there is enough of the base (just over half) to show that one edge was 35mm in length. The raised design on the base consists of a centre dot, a circle (ext diameter 26mm) and a hexagonal outline (side 27mm). The vessel wall is 2.8mm thick. This is a fairly small hexagonal bottle with base design similar to Cool and Price 1995 (Colchester Archaeol Rep 8) p.193, fig 11.8 no 2143 but perhaps without the outer row of dots shown on that eg - however there is an irregula…

Two fragments of Roman window glass. Cast window glass was probably produced by pouring molten glass into trays resulting in relatively thick panes with a characteristic flat, rough underside, a glossy, slightly undulating upper surface, frequently with tooling marks and a rounded edge (Boon 1966). Most cast window glass is blue/green, as are these examples, but pale green, greenish colourless and colourless fragments are also known. 1: roughly triangular shaped fragment, 22.93mm by 12.16mm in size, 2.23mm in thickness, 1.12g in weight. 2: Roughly rectangular fragment, 11.02…

It is roughly rectangular in shape and measures 14.30mm by 12.71mm in size and 0.99g in weight.

Glass bead; Flat, circular bead of matt, transluscent, pale green glass. The bead is a thick disc with rounded edges and a very small, circular hole through the centre. It is not of an even thickness, narrowing towards one side (which would presumably be the top when the bead was strung as it would be lighter than the thicker side). The bead is polished smooth over its surface with a few chips missing from the narrower side. Glass beads of this type are very difficult to date without a context, but I have suggested a late Roman or Early Medieval date, based on parallels recorded els…

A body fragment from a Roman blue green hexagonal bottle. Fragments of three sides survive, there are scratches on the outer face of the fragment, possibly where the bottle was lifted in and out of a close fitting wood or basketry container. Such blue green storage bottles of various shapes were in use from the third quarter of the 1st century to the third quarter of the 2nd century (Price and Cottam, 1998, 198-99). The fragment measures 30.29mm in height and 43.97mm in width, it is 4.37mm in thickness.
