A fragment from the base of a glass drinking vessel of possible Roman date. The fragment appears to derive from the constriction on a pedestal base and features a domed interior surface surrounded by the stump of a thin vessel wall; underneath the concave lower surface for the base has a swirled texture from the production and cooling process. There is no obvious pontil scar. The glass has a greenish tinge demonstrating an unbleached natural iron content and contains small bubbles with a laminar texture visible in the cross section at the breaks.

Glass vessel fragment. A small concavo-convex sherd from a globular vessel of translucent cobalt blue glass with numerous bubbles to length 2.5mm trapped in the metal. Circumferential lines and a rubbed band towards one edge suggest the turning of a vessel while it was being blown. The good preservation and bubbled metal may together point to a Roman vessel or a glass made according to a Roman soda glass recipe, a skill which lasted into Middle Saxon times but which was then lost until the post-medieval period. The finder kindly notes the bubbled and translucent character of the glass …

A fragment of a clear glass of green-blue tint bottle base, dating from the Roman to Post Medieval period, AD 43-1500. The fragment is a shard from the base of a hand blown glass vessel with punt; part of an inner ring of glass adheres to the edge of the punt, possibly as a flaw corrected during manufacture. The base of the vessel does not appear to worn and contains a number of bubbles of various size, suggesting bespoke manufacture. This could be either a Roman or a Post-Medieval vessel, as the recipes for soda glass used in both periods were similar, and both could produce very dur…

This is a rim fragment from a roman blown glass vessel. The expanded rim is hollow and oval in cross-section and formed by folding the fabric in two, this has resulted in the surviving wall having a double layer which is fused together at the top by the rim but has become separated lower down. Sandwiched in between these layers is a linear decoration that appears to have been formed from an applied white/creamy paste or paint. Unfortunately, because of the diminutive size of the surviving fragment it is impossible to determine the style or extent of the original decoration. The …
