Copper alloy unidentified object fragment, possibly part of a strap fitting. A cast bar, now part-melted, to which are attached the expanded ends of a small integrally cast spool-shaped object of length 14.2mm with expanded round ends with a space 9.4mm wide between bar and spool. A function entailing the constraint of a light strap might explain this form. The melting of the object is unlikely to have come about accidentally. A Roman cast copper alloy strap fitting/strap loop dating to c.AD 43-410 The strap loop consists of a rectangular plate that is rectangular in cross-section. A globular knob, with a circular in cross-section shaft projects from one side. The other side has a rectangular loop with an elongated oval aperture. No decoraton is visible. Mid-green patina. A pair of cast and juxtaposed rings with an integrally cast triangular plate between them; an incised border outlines the triangle which also has an off-centre round moulded boss within it. Abraded. A near complete cast copper-alloy strap fitting of Roman to early medieval date (c. 350-450). Description: The object is 'propeller'-shaped in plan- oval in the middle with fan-shaped arms at either side- and trapezoid in cross-section, with bevelled edges on the front. An incomplete copper-alloy military belt plate of Roman date, c.AD. 150 – 300. The object comprises two ovate panels joined by a narrowed integral D-shape sectioned shaft. A similar shaft extends from the opposite edge of each panel, one terminating is a transverse ridge, the other in a worn break. The panels have raised edges creating recessed cells which retain blue enamel. The reverse is flat and undecorated. The metal has a mid-green patina and is worn. The object has a narrow rectangular plate with two rivet holes, both infilled with rusted iron. The rear end of the plate has two notches providing a decorative trefoil. A cast copper alloy Roman Military harness junction fitting or phalera connector dating from the first to third centuries AD. The strap fitting has, at one end, a subrectangular flange with rivet hole for attaching the fitting to a leather strap; the reverse is recessed with a small retaining flange to take the strap. In front of this is a rounded ridged collar, 10.9mm in diameter. The front end of the fitting comprises a curved and tapering arm with rounded cross section which has a distinctive T-shaped terminal, 12.6mm wide.
