A complete lead-alloy weight or gaming piece of uncertain date. The object is circular with a flat top and base and a central perforation running through it. All surfaces appear undecorated and are worn.  The metal has a light white/brown patina and is in fair condition. The object is 22.7mm in diameter, 8.6mm thick and weighs 24.1g. The perforation is 8.2mm in diameter. The term 'weight' is used here in its broadest sense to include uses that do not involve weighing (e.g. holding-down, tensioning, etc.). They were commonly used from the Iron Age through to the post-mediev…

A complete lead-alloy gaming piece or weight of uncertain date. The object is sub-conical with a flat base and tapering sides to a rounded top. It appears undecorated. The object is 10mm tall, 16.5mm in diameter and weighs 12.8g. Lead objects such as this are common metal detector finds but are rare from excavated contexts. This means that the dating of lead objects of this general type is problematic, and their use is invariably uncertain. Similarly shaped objects are known from Viking contexts and are interpreted as weights or gaming pieces. The predominant Viking Age sy…

A complete lead-alloy weight of uncertain date. The object is cylindrical and stands upright on either of its flat faces. The weight appears to be undecorated. The metal has a pale cream and grey patina and is worn. The object is 15.46mm tall, 14.21mm in diameter and weighs 22.19g. Due to the lack of secure context for the current example dating it and other examples of this general type is problematic, and their use is invariably uncertain. The object is 16.34mm tall, 19.74mm in diameter and weighs 24.11g. Weights of a similar form have been identified from Early-Medieval contexts. Numerous similar objects have been recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme including SWYOR-427442 which states that such objects are often described as gaming pieces but there are few excavated examples with which to compare them. They can also be interpre…

An incomplete cast lead-alloy weight, possibly a suspended or pendant weight, of uncertain date. The weight has a D-shaped section with one side flat and the other convex. The bottom of the weigh is curved which widens and then narrows towards the top. A narrowed area extends from the rest of the weight. This terminates with a worn and patinaed break. This missing area may have housed a suspension loop. A pair of wide gashes can be found on the convex face of the object which reveal shiny lead-alloy material. The object is green-brown in colour with a wo…

An incomplete lead-alloy weight of uncertain date, possibly Roman to Post-Medieval. The weight is broadly conical with faceted sides, flat base and pointed top. An iron bar projects from the top and bottom of the weight which would have formed a double suspension loop. The metal has a mid-grey/white patina and is worn. The weight is 37mm tall, 18.8mm in diameter and weighs 33.8g. Similar examples are recorded on the PAS database including WAW-4D0DDB, SWYOR-0E8D29, WAW-10E6BB and SUR-E1CC1A.

Twenty-three lead alloy weights dating to an unknown period. The weights are all cylindrical and barrel in shape. Some have been made by rolling a piece of cast lead sheet of varying thickness and length, forming an overlapping seam. Others are more solid and appear to have been cast as whole weights. Some weights appear to have an aperture throughout their interior, whereas others are solid. It is likely these weights functioned as a fishing net or line weights. The weights are varying sizes and weights and have a brown-grey patina. Lead weights of this type are common finds fr…
