Flat bow of small curvature expanding towards the missing foot. The bow is decorated with fluted reeding, which runs along its entire length and terminates at the moulded transverse rib located at the bow’s junction with the spring-cover. The catch plate is deformed and partly missing but contained a single perforation of indeterminate shape. The cylindrical spring-cover is open along a slit on the back of the brooch and at either end. Only two incomplete fragments of the brooch survive. The bow has been bent through ninety degrees, although it is uncertain whether this occurred…

Small gold, or gold alloy, ring of keeled form with notched shoulders, which form the upper part of the hoop, projecting at an angle to the bezel. The bezel contains a plain, sub-circular boss and, on one side only, a perforated sub-semicircular flange, which gives the bezel a decidedly asymmetrical appearance. T-shaped brooch with tubular wings, hinged pin and flat tapering bow. The bow narrows through a marked step mid-way along its length. The bow is embellished with a central rib flanked on either side by a narrow groove set adjacent to the edge of the bow which extend only as far as the step. The ends of both wings are decorated by a incised groove which extends only around the front half of the cylindrical wing. Most of the pin, the catchplate and the lower part of the bow are missing. Surviving length 36mm, width of wings 30mm. As a type the T-shaped brooch is a rather general grouping…

Fragment of a cast copper alloy two-piece trumpet brooch. Only part of the bow and head of the brooch survive; the spring, chord, pin, lower half of the bow and catch-plate are missing. The surface of the brooch is heavily corroded and much original surface detail has been lost. The reverse of the brooch's head contains the remains of a perforated lug, which would have presumably accommodated an axial bar. The decoration on the middle of the bow consists of poorly defined moulding rather than a typical "acanthus" motif. No other decoration on the brooch is visible. Surviving length 43m…

Romano-British, copper alloy Colchester derivative brooch of the Polden Hills type. The brooch contains a bilateral spring of apparently six coils whose overhead chord is held in place by a simple rearward-facing hook. A copper alloy axis bar passes through the coils of the spring and is held by pierced circular plates at the ends of the wings (cf. type L Hattatt 1982, 49, table 2). The wings are semi-cylindrical and both accommodate and hide from view the spring mechanism. The pierced circular plates at the ends of the wings are larger than the wings giving them the appearance of dec…

Cast copper alloy undecorated, hinged, T-shaped bow brooch. The bow is narrow and narrows as it curves towards an almost point-like tip, while the wings of the brooch are unusually short. Most of the pin and part of the small catch-plate are missing. Length 47.5mm, width of the head 11mm, weight 6.5 grams. For a close parallel cf. Hattatt 1987, 104, no.906, fig.37. As a type the T-shaped bow brooch is a rather general grouping which encompasses nearly forty sub-types, several of which are demonstrably localised in their distribution. T-shaped brooches remained in vogue from the mid fir…

Copper alloy brooch of Pannonian Flugelfibel type. The head of the brooch expands to accommodate the missing spring and pin mechanism which was held in place by a central rearward lug the upper part of which was extended to form the chord hook. The upper part of the straight bow is embellished with a single knob set between two forward facing wings curved towards each other, the lower of which is incomplete. The end of the upper wing, which has been repaired by the finder, contains a central perforation (diameter 2-3mm), presumably to accommodate a knob or other fitting. Only the sect…

Incomplete cast perforated pin or decorated needle probably of Roman date. The decoration on the piece is confined to the head and consists of a small knobbed tip above a conical swirl. The perforation is at an angle of between 15 and 20 degrees from horizontal to the axis of the shaft. The sides around the perforation are somewhat squared. The piece thins slightly beneath the perforation, before expanding at another incised swirl. There is a low waist marking the beginning of the plain shaft. The shaft tapers gently to an ancient break. This would appear to be an unusual example, sty…
