Lead hinge. A cast rectangular section plate, expanded and slotted at one end to receive an inserted lead spindle engaging a perforated lug projecting from the end of a similar but narrower plate, which is broken close to the meeting of the two components. A hole is pierced in the larger plate near the hinge, suggesting attachment; an impressed circle of diameter 7.5mm my suggest a large  or decorative head for the fastening pin. Patinated. The soft material would seem far from ideal for such a mechanical use. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Medieval, 43-1500 Length: 43.8mm, Wi…

An incomplete copper-alloy unidentified object of uncertain date, c.AD 43 – 1700. The object is an elongated triangular-shaped thin sheet plate with the narrower end rounded. A circular perforation can be found on the narrower end. It appears to be undecorated. No obvious breaks are visible on the object. The metal has a mid-green patina and is in fair condition. The object is 19.05mm long, 10.79mm wide, 0.36mm thick and weighs 0.35g. This object is from a site yielding material ranging from the Roman to Post-Medieval periods with a high concentration of Early-Mediev…

A complete lead-alloy gaming piece or weight of uncertain date. The object is sub-conical with a flat base and tapering sides to a rounded top. It appears undecorated. The object is 10mm tall, 16.5mm in diameter and weighs 12.8g. Lead objects such as this are common metal detector finds but are rare from excavated contexts. This means that the dating of lead objects of this general type is problematic, and their use is invariably uncertain. Similarly shaped objects are known from Viking contexts and are interpreted as weights or gaming pieces. The predominant Viking Age sy…

A complete cast lead-alloy probable bead or weight of uncertain date, Roman to Post-Medieval, c. AD 43-1900. The object is sub-spherical with irregular sides. A narrow off-centre perforation runs through the object. The object features clear casting lines running vertically between the two ends of the perforation. The object is also decorated with vertical grooves and ridges running straight down around the edges of the surface. This may be an attempt to produce a scallop-like design. The metal has a light brown/white patina and is worn. The object is 9.82mm in length,…

A cast lead unidentified object, of unknown date, AD 43 - 1900. It is more spherical than hemispherical; domed with a flat reverse. One side is also flattened, perhaps as post depositional damage. An integral lead shaft projects from the centre of the circular flat face. The shaft has four longitudinal ridges and appears to be complete despite the short length. The lead has a smooth cream patina suggesting some age.  Length: 14.65mm Weight: 16.47g Diameter: 15.1mm The object may be a stud or a peg for a game. It could also be an incomplete button. A cast lead sub-discoid possible weight or ingot, of unknown date, AD 43 - 1900. It is circular with ngled sides and an uneven sloping top face. The reverse has a concavity in the centre where the lead has contracted while cooling. There are no obvious marks. The mass does not fit into any standard systems of weight meaurement. It may be a non-standard weight, or be an ingot - a convenient way to store unused lead. Height: 11.1mm Weight: 70g Diameter: 30.41mm

A complete lead-alloy weight of uncertain date. The object is cylindrical and stands upright on either of its flat faces. The weight appears to be undecorated. The metal has a pale cream and grey patina and is worn. The object is 15.46mm tall, 14.21mm in diameter and weighs 22.19g. Due to the lack of secure context for the current example dating it and other examples of this general type is problematic, and their use is invariably uncertain. The term 'weight' is used here in its broadest sense to include uses that do not involve weighing (e.g. holding-down, tensioning, etc.).

Copper alloy unidentified object fragment. Cast openwork fragment of a possibly spoked or wheel-shaped object with ferrous corrosion around two holes, retaining an outer curved edge but broken on its other sides. The finder kindly suggests a Romano-British date, which is deemed likely. However, the close juxtaposition of iron and copper alloy, as opposed to the sheathing of the former with the latter, is also a feature of a range of early medieval objects which combined the strength of iron and the decorative effect of copper alloy. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Early Medieval, 43-…

Lead probable weight. Cast discoid weight with a plain cross or saltire moulded in bold relief on its upper surface. Dave Haldenby kindly considers this object to be of uncertain date due to this atypical decoration, which might rather be expected in an Anglo-Saxon or later Christian context. In the former, it might have represented an imprecise four mancus value - the mancus, a gold coin valued at 30 silver pennies, weighed 4.82gms. However, the use of a weight made of material which might readily be tampered with to check payments in gold seems unlikely, especially when its correspon…

Lead weight. Cast truncated conical lead weight. Dave Haldenby kindly notes that this weight could be considered of Viking date by virtue of its form and patina; it is undecorated. DH ref: G1a. If indeed early medieval in date, this would represent a markedly overweight ora/ore according to the system used in areas under Norse or Norwegian Viking influence. Dave comments as follows: 'I’d only seriously challenge you on one of the weights which you have preferred not to see as Viking, that is NLM-732923, which has good form and what I see as a small peck/ depression to one s…

Lead weight. Cast discoid lead weight with upstanding rim on both sides, possibly marking loss of an inserted object from both sides; Roman discoid weights may sometimes have the rim emphasised. Dave Haldenby kindly deems the date uncertain because of the possibly missing inset/s. DH ref: D1a. The present mass does not correlate with that of the sub-units discerned to govern Viking-Age systems for the weighing of bullion, and it would require the putative lost insets to have weighed about 3gms to bring this object under those systems, which would be heavy for the type of weights distin…

The edges of a sub-circular perforation can be seen in the centre. The bead is 12.85mm long,  7.82mm wide and 5.94mm thick. It weighs 0.94g. Glass beads are very difficult to date with any certainty. They are often thought to be Roman in date though blue glass beads were commonly for use in spangles on lace making bobbins in the 19th century. Due to a lack of contextual evidence and any diagnost…

A length of copper alloy decorated with punched crescents.
