An incomplete copper-alloy proto-headstud brooch, dating to the early Romano-British period (c.AD45-120). The brooch spring is formed from a length of copper alloy wire which extends from the rear brooch head and has been coiled to form a spring of six turns in total: the wire is coiled around the axis bar for three turns, and is then turns to become the integral external chord looping (and thus securing the spring) just below the head of the brooch, before looping a further three times around the axis bar, becoming the pin at the central point. Incomplete (a fresh piece missing) rough oval/disc with a hole discoloured with black deposit rather than burnt, a very micaceous fabric, SAMCG I think rather than under-fired SAMEG (but slip very thin and no other inclusions). A complete lead vessel repair (pot mend) of uncertain period, but it is likely to date to sometime between the Roman and medieval periods. The object consists two irregularly shaped discs joined at the centres by a short wide neck. Both discs are roughly oval in shape although one is smaller than the other. A large stone disc, possibly a pot base or lid dating from the Roman to the post medieval period. The disc measures 17.5cm in diameter and is perforated in the centre and burnt on one face and part of the circumference. Ruth Shaffrey notes that 'The type of burning present on this disc (blackening) is caused by direct exposure to flames (rather than just extreme heat) and it seems likely that this was used as a pot base, or more likely a pot lid (the perforation allowing for the release of some steam from a cooking vessel).
