A complete worked flint probable handaxe of Palaeolithic date (500,000 - 180,000 BC). Description: The object is sub-triangular in plan and sub-triangular in cross section. The proximal end is bulbous, reducing to a point at the distal end. It is formed from a secondary flake of translucent brown flint with white patination over most of the surface. There are two small areas at the proximal end with a sandy colour and texture and the dorsal face has red brown iron staining over half of its surface. The object has been bifacially w…

Complete handaxe in rolled condition, of Wymer, J. J. (1999) type E now patinated orange, the recent chips and other damage shows the underlying flint to have originally been tones of grey. Very small and single edged, almost unifacial with most of the hard hammer struck flake scars to one face, the opposing face is mostly smooth in appearance, but there are the ridges left from a few, semi-invasive flake scars to one lateral edge and the butt, the flatter part is either from a natural thermal fracture, or the remains of the ventral surface of a large flake, the rolled and bettered con…

A pointed retouched flint blade, possibly of late Upper Paleolithic date, 84.5mm in length, lanceolate in form and struck from a brown coloured flint. It has a trapezoidal cross section and a slightly curved side profile. There is low angle sub-parallel retouch along the entirety of one long side and along two thirds of the other, on the dorsal surface only, running to the distal tip, which has a triangular cross section and has been retouched around and across its entirety with semi abrupt and low angle retouch, to refine a working point. A  Lower Palaeolithic bifacial flint handaxe of Acheulean tradition dating to c. 500,000 to 250,000 BC. This is a 'ficron' type handaxe which belongs to the Middle Acheulean tradition. Acording to Wymer (1999) typology, the handaxe is sub-triangular in plan, with straight sides (edge type e), a slightly rounded tip (point type i) and a flat based butt (butt type d).  There are multiple large flaking scars covering both the dorsal and ventral sides with slightly finer flake removal along the edges. The whole artefact has orange/brown iron staining as well as heavy ab…

An incomplete and rolled flint handaxe of lower Paleolithic date (500,000-180,000 BC). The tool is bifacially worked and missing its tip but was likely of Ficron type (Wymer (1999) Type M). The tool is triangular in shape, with a tapering profile and plano convex cross section. One side retains around 40% cortex and the surface is patinated / recorticated to an orange brown from prolonged deposition in iron-rich gravels.

The dorsal face has several flake scars from a platform orientated 90 degrees from the main axis of striking, these appear to have been detached from the core before the main blow was struck to make this flake/tool, the result is one lateral edge pre-retouched with the terminations of oblique flake scars, the opposing edge is more of a knife-like cutting edge, all thin edges are now damaged (obscuring any original retouch) from the actions of the waves a…

Small, incomplete handaxe of Wymer, J. J. All surfaces have been modified by flaking so no original surfaces of the “blank” nodule or thermal fracture this handaxe was made from remain. Lower Palaeolithic, 600,000 to 250,000 BC.

The tool is bifacially worked from a brown flint using soft hammer flaking with a lenticular cross section and a dark brown to orange patination typical of a period of prolonged deposition in iron-rich gravel deposits. At the proximal end of the ventral surface a meidum bulb of percussion and an eraillure scar are visible, as are some medium conchoidal ripples close to the distal end. Being under ten cm long, it is classified as a Wymer (1999) type E, the asymmetry to the profile (plano-convex) and plan (one edge appears to have been intentionally blunted, for handling?) is probably due to the shape of the blank from which it was made from, likely to have been a thermal (frost) fracture or a large struck flake, something of similar cross section to begin…

The tertiary flake has been stuck with a hard hammer with a prominent bulb of percussion and rippling on the ventral face. One long edge may have short abrupt retouch, but the removals are irregular and may be damage, so it is suggested this is more likely a waste flake or debitage.  Length: 60.22mm; width: 30.57mm; thickness; 9.53mm and weight: 13.40g. The patination of the flake suggests an early date possibly of the Lower/Early Middle Paleolithic period.

Orange iron-stained flint core fragment, as kindly identified by the finder. A broad chunk with broad and narrow flake removal scars from probably unidirectional working from a large striking platform. The finder suggests an early date, indicated not only by the form of the object but also its surface coloration. Probably chipped in deep antiquity. Suggested date: Late Palaeolithic, 40000-10000 BC Height: 31.1mm, Width: 49.8mm, Thickness: 29mm, Weight: 44.27gms

Lightly rolled thick ovate handaxe, of Wymer's type K with recent edge loss to the thin edges, of slight orange and speckled off white patination with the original mottled grey flint showing through. All flake scars appear to be semi-hard hammer struck, they overlap at the centreline, so almost no original surface remains to the faces, both cutting edges are straight (edge type e), one lateral edge is of an acute angle and probably was the primary cutting edge, the other is much steeper and at its mid-point retains a small area of thin, worn cortex, not conducive to efficient …

Rough cordate/sub-cordate handaxe in lightly rolled condition, of black flint with lighter grey inclusions within and no patination, of Wymer’s type G/J, all flake scars appear to hard hammer struck with a slight hollow to the dorsal face leaving a patch of thin, weathered cortex extant where the flakes failed to meet or overlap in the centre. The ventral face has an angled step towards the butt, this is the unworked remnant of the thermal (frost) fracture and is dull and matt compared with the glossy nature of the flake scars around it. Because of the hollow and the step to eith…

Large, hard hammer struck cleaver in fairly fresh condition and slight brown patination to the dark grey mottled flint; only slight recent damage to the thin edges, of Wymer’s type H, though the “point” in this case does actually go to a slight point rather than a transverse cutting edge, this whole end has been produced by an enormous tranchet flake removal to the dorsal face (cortical face), the ventral face has a similar removal to further thin it, though this has been partially obscured by invasive retouch to refine the shape. Both lateral edges have a slight twis…

Large, hard hammer struck pointed handaxe, of Wymer (J. A bi-facially worked flint implement. Probably a small handaxe. It is now cordate in shape, but the edge damage means this is not certain and it is possible it was originally a more Boute Coupé-like form. The handaxe has been made on a large flake of mid grey flint, giving it a plano-convex profile. There is heavy, off-white patination over both faces, that on the dorsal face is slightly thicker and more yellowed. An extremely water worn and rolled flint handaxe of lower Paleolithic date (500,000-180,000 BC). The tool is of Ficron type, 124.5mm in length and of Wymer (1999) Type M. The tool is triangular in shape, with a tapering profile and flat cross section. Despite heavy abrasion, it is clearly bifacially worked using soft hammer flaking. A patch of grey cortex remains on one side and on the butt.

Sub-discoidal handaxe of glossy black flint with lighter grey inclusions and two patches of thin, weathered grey cortex to each side. The rounded end is of an acute angle enough to be considered a potential cutting edge or a thin angled butt, the opposing end has been obliquely and steeply retouched to one side only, this could be seen as an obtuse angled chopper, this unusual edge could be a later addition or adaptation from a more conventional handaxe shape a specific task in hand. Lower Palaeolithic, 600,000 to 450,000 BC. Likely to be the earlier date, given the site.
