A complete flint End Scraper of Upper Palaeolithic date (150,00-10,000 BC). The lithic is sub-ovate in plan and bi-convex in section. The dorsal surface has short parallel flaking along the distal and left-hand edges and a single negative scar at the distal end. The proximal dorsal and ventral ends retain covering cortex. There is rough semi-abrupt retouch along the distal and left-hand edges. The ventral surface is slightly convex with multiple negative scars. The lithic retains a minor amount of cortex and is therefore a secondary flake. The lithic retains cortex and is therefor…

The dorsal surface has two predominantly negative scars with an off centre arise. The proximal and distal ends taper into points. The left- and right-hand edges she rough semi-abrupt retouch. the ventral surface is slightly convex and retains bulb of percussion situated toward the distal end, with shallow negative scars partially occluding the bulb. Orange iron-stained flint with cortex, scraper. A thick dentiform flake with broad and narrow flakes struck from its dorsal side and a bulb at the broader end of the ventral surface. A curving notch was formed by retouch of one long edge executed from the dorsal aspect, retaining cortex to permit pressure to be brought to bear on that working edge. The orange surface colour suggests the object was subsequently incorporated into gravels. The finder kindly identifies this tool as a Clactonian notched scraper, by reference to Butler, C. 2005, Prehistoric Flintwork, Tempus. Suggested date:…

Sub-discoidal double ended scraper, knapped from a broad, sub-trapezoidal sectioned, soft hammer struck tertiary flake, the bulb of percussion has been removed by the steep retouch to the constricted end, the broader end is similarly retouched, forming the slightly asymmetrical convex scraping edge. The steeper angled lateral edge has two remnants of flake scars that terminated in slight hinges, these were struck while the blank for this was still attached to the core, this edge seems to have been blunted to some degree by steep retouch too, probably to serve as a “back” to…

Thick and stout end scraper in fresh condition, made from a tertiary hard hammer struck flake, of glossy black patinated flint with steep retouch to the distal end on the dorsal face. The platform carries three incipient hertzian cones, it seems it took three blows to remove this flake from the core causing a slightly odd bulb of percussion. Lower Palaeolithic, 600,000 to 250,000.
