Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Buckinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete flint End Scraper of Upper Palaeolithic date (150,00-10,000 BC). The lithic is sub-ovate in plan and bi-convex in section. The dorsal surface has short parallel flaking along the distal and left-hand edges and a single negative scar at the distal end. The proximal dorsal and ventral ends retain covering cortex. There is rough semi-abrupt retouch along the distal and left-hand edges. The ventral surface is slightly convex with multiple negative scars. The lithic retains a minor amount of cortex and is therefore a secondary flake. The lithic retains cortex and is therefor…

Middle palaeolithic convex side scraper (Mode 3). Features one convex lateral edge modified with semi-abrupt retouch to form scraping edge.  The opposite edge is unmodified, with one side of the scraper retaining its light grey cortex, and the other side a light reddish brown colour. Dates c. 245,000-40,000 BP.

Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Milton Keynes
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete flint Scraper of late (final) Upper Palaeolithic date (12,000-10,000 BC). The lithic is lanceolate plan and bi-convex in section. The dorsal surface has two predominantly negative scars with an off centre arise. The proximal and distal ends taper into points. The left- and right-hand edges she rough semi-abrupt retouch. the ventral surface is slightly convex and retains bulb of percussion situated toward the distal end, with shallow negative scars partially occluding the bulb. The majority of both the ventral and distal surfaces are covered with recortification which is li…

Record ID: NLM-365D41
Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Orange iron-stained flint with cortex, scraper. A thick dentiform flake with broad and narrow flakes struck from its dorsal side and a bulb at the broader end of the ventral surface. A curving notch was formed by retouch of one long edge executed from the dorsal aspect, retaining cortex to permit pressure to be brought to bear on that working edge. The orange surface colour suggests the object was subsequently incorporated into gravels. The finder kindly identifies this tool as a Clactonian notched scraper, by reference to Butler, C. 2005, Prehistoric Flintwork, Tempus. Suggested date:…

Record ID: NMS-7DD2B4
Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Sub-discoidal double ended scraper, knapped from a broad, sub-trapezoidal sectioned, soft hammer struck tertiary flake, the bulb of percussion has been removed by the steep retouch to the constricted end, the broader end is similarly retouched, forming the slightly asymmetrical convex scraping edge. The steeper angled lateral edge has two remnants of flake scars that terminated in slight hinges, these were struck while the blank for this was still attached to the core, this edge seems to have been blunted to some degree by steep retouch too, probably to serve as a “back” to…

County: Northamptonshire

A complete flint Scraper of Upper Palaeolithic date (50,000-9000 BC).  The lithic is ovate in plan and Bi-convex in section. The dorsal surface has long covering flaking, under a thick orange layer of re-cortification. The proximal end is narrowed and all other edges have rough abrupt/semi abrupt retouch. The ventral surface is slightly convex with some voids in the re-cortified surface. The visible surface of the flint is deep orange. The lithic is a tertiary flake and shows similarities to 'tortoise shell' core, characteristic of Levallois style tool production …

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A retouched flake or scraper made from a secondary nodule flake of dark grey to black flint and of suspected Paleolithic date. The dorsal surface retains around 3/4 of its grey cortex but has clear retouchwed removals around the edge on three sides. The ventral surface has a clear bulb of percussion with damage from tumbling.

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Thick and stout end scraper in fresh condition, made from a tertiary hard hammer struck flake, of glossy black patinated flint with steep retouch to the distal end on the dorsal face. The platform carries three incipient hertzian cones, it seems it took three blows to remove this flake from the core causing a slightly odd bulb of percussion. Lower Palaeolithic, 600,000 to 250,000. Given the site, probably the earlier date given.

Large, hard hammer struck tertiary flake with a huge single hertzian cone to the platform, of glossy dark orange/brown patinated flint, the dorsal face is lighter than the ventral face with lighter orange fade patination near to the proximal end. One lateral edge is damaged with a large break, the opposing lateral edge is steeply retouched along its length to form a scraping edge.  Lower Palaeolithic, 600,000 to 250,000 BC.
