Sub-discoidal double ended scraper, knapped from a broad, sub-trapezoidal sectioned, soft hammer struck tertiary flake, the bulb of percussion has been removed by the steep retouch to the constricted end, the broader end is similarly retouched, forming the slightly asymmetrical convex scraping edge. The steeper angled lateral edge has two remnants of flake scars that terminated in slight hinges, these were struck while the blank for this was still attached to the core, this edge seems to have been blunted to some degree by steep retouch too, probably to serve as a “back” to…

Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Thick and stout end scraper in fresh condition, made from a tertiary hard hammer struck flake, of glossy black patinated flint with steep retouch to the distal end on the dorsal face. The platform carries three incipient hertzian cones, it seems it took three blows to remove this flake from the core causing a slightly odd bulb of percussion. Lower Palaeolithic, 600,000 to 250,000. Given the site, probably the earlier date given.

Large, hard hammer struck tertiary flake with a huge single hertzian cone to the platform, of glossy dark orange/brown patinated flint, the dorsal face is lighter than the ventral face with lighter orange fade patination near to the proximal end. One lateral edge is damaged with a large break, the opposing lateral edge is steeply retouched along its length to form a scraping edge.  Lower Palaeolithic, 600,000 to 250,000 BC.

Thick sectioned, hard hammer struck tertiary scraper in rolled condition, of pale grey flint with darker mottles, both faces are thinly iron stained with darker iron stains to the high points of the dorsal face, there is extensive recent damage to both faces and the edges, now evident as areas lacking patination. Lower to Middle Palaeolithic, 600,000 to 40,000 BC.

Primary hard hammer struck flake, of unatinated glossy black flint with thin grey/white cortex to the dorsal face, both lateral edges appear to be intentionally and steeply retouched to form a side scraper, the distal end terminates in a hinge and is left as is. Lower Palaeolithic, 600,000 to 150,000 BC.

Secondary, soft hammer struck flake, of unpatinated dark black/grey flint with a faint orange inclusion to one edge. Both lateral edges and the distal end have been steeply retouched to form the scraping edges, the distal end has shaped in such a way to form a slightly pointed "nose", this is undercut with tiny hinged flake scars and maybe unintentional, it just proved difficult to remove the pointed end. It is tricky to say if this is Lower Palaeolithic or later, it is in very fresh condition, there is no rolling to be seen on the edges and the high points to the flake scars, t…

Slightly rolled, hard hammer struck primary flake with six steep retouch flakes to the distal end and sides to form an end scraper, remaining cortex is very thin and weathered, flint is mottled grey, now patinated black/brown with the coarse inclusions showing a shade or two lighter. It could also be viewed that this is a very small core, worked down from a flake. Lower Palaeolithic, 600,000 to 150,000 BC.

Tertiary, soft hammer struck small flake of white and grey patinated flint with slight iron stains to both faces, one edge is semi-invasively retouched to form a scraping edge. Due to its similar patination and proximity to NMS-990E2E it is possible that this is of Late (final) Palaeolithic date, though it is of unusually small form.

Late Upper (final) Palaeolithic semi-hard hammer struck blade with a faceted and isolated platform and only a slight bulge to the bulb of percussion, and a tiny bulbar scar, now white and light grey patinated, with spotty iron stains to both faces. The distal end is finely and invasively retouched to form the scraping edge, and both lateral edges are "bruised" or use-worn. Recent damage to parts of the edges reveal the original colour of the flint was black. 10,000 to 12,000 BC.

Possible Late (final) Upper Palaeolithic secondary end scraper, hard hammer struck with three impact points to the faceted platform, of differentially patinated black flint, the dorsal face has slight pale patination mostly towards the distal end. The ventral face is patinated light grey, almost white, both faces have spotty iron stains. The extant cortex to the dorsal face is thin and weathered and this edge is recently damaged from platform to the steep retouch of the scraping edge, a few other recently damaged areas along the edges are evident from their lack of patination.

Secondary, hard hammer struck scraper, from an unpatinated flake of mottled grey flint with pale grey banding below the cortex, and an iron spot to the dorsal face. Both distal and proximal ends have been steeply retouched to form a double ended scraper. Possibly late (final) Upper Palaeolithic, 12,000 to 10,000 BC, though it could be later, as it is from a single platform core with cortex along one one lateral edge, U Pal scrapers of this type are usually tertiary.

Possibly Early Upper Palaeolithic tertiary nosed scraper. Made from mottled pale grey flint with some iron staining. Retouched with semi-abrupt flake scars to form a neat symmetrical "nose" at the distal end. Dimensions 58 x 33 x 9mm. Butler (2005) places nosed scrapers in the Early Upper Palaeolithic.

Late palaeolithic double-ended scraper. Segment of a large blade with a single crest in a chocolate brown stained flint. Both ends appear to have been steeply retouched to give a double ended scraper but both have suffered ancient damage. The distal edge has small neat retouch scars at both ends but the central part of the edge has two larger scars with evidence of crushing on the ventral side. The proximal end appears to have been damaged by the loss of a large chip and shows slight evidence of crushing on the ventral edge. The find spot is near one of the head ways of the River Wens…

Paleolithic Flake tool. Dimensions 69 x 48 x 21mm. Oval secondary flake with c.40% thin cortex on the distal face. The ventral face has been extensively modified by shallow peripheral flaking, leaving part of flakeā€™s surface as a central area. The flake is stained light brown over grey flint, shown by small edge damage on the dorsal right edge. The tool resembles a miniature handaxe. Palaeolithic, possibly Middle Palaeolithic.

Lower Palaeolithic end scraper on secondary flint flake with prominent bulb of percussion. All flake surfaces stained deep brown, over buff coloured flint, shown by a small recent chip on the ventral face. In contrast the thin weathered cortical area is a pale creamy white.
