Orange flint with iron-stain spotting, core, as kindly identified by the finder. A chunk with opposed concave faces and with scars from the probably unidirectional removal of long parallel flakes using a now restricted striking platform. The staining may suggest the object was subsequently incorporated into gravels. Suggested date: Late Palaeolithic, 40000-10000 BC Height: 45.5mm, Width: 44.5mm, Thickness: 29mm, Weight: 49.26gms

Orange iron-stained flint, core, as kindly identified by the finder. A thin chunk with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side using a small platform at one end, and with a markedly concave ventral surface below the platform. Iron staining suggests the object has subsequently been incorporated into gravels. Suggested date: Late Palaeolithic, 40000-10000 BC. Length/Height: 42.4mm, Width: 38mm, Thickness: 12.2mm, Weight: 26.13gms

Orange iron-stained flint core fragment, as kindly identified by the finder. A broad chunk with broad and narrow flake removal scars from probably unidirectional working from a large striking platform. The finder suggests an early date, indicated not only by the form of the object but also its surface coloration. Probably chipped in deep antiquity. Suggested date: Late Palaeolithic, 40000-10000 BC Height: 31.1mm, Width: 49.8mm, Thickness: 29mm, Weight: 44.27gms

Semi-bifacial core or crude chopper, all flakes are hard hammer struck from a naturally broken section of an oval sectioned nodule of flint, the cortex extant is weathered and mottled light grey/ brown, the flake scars are patinated orange with the black of the flint below showing through in places, the high points to the flake scars are abraded and rolled, appearing almost white. One face has four flake scars, the other has two to three, the latter may represent flakes taken from this face as platform preparation for the flakes to the other face. The lateral break has been utilised a…

Possible semi-discoidal core or crude chopper, now patinated orange with brown cortex extant to both faces, the high points to the flake scars are rolled and now appear white, recent edge damage shows the original colour of the flint to have been black/dark grey. The concave face has some possibly intentional flake scars, though at least one appears to be natural with exaggerated fissures to the surface, the other, more convex face appears to be more convincingly worked, though only a few flakes have been removed. The broad notch (c. 28 mm wide) to one side may be intentional. …

Large and well struck multi-platform core, all flake scars appear to be large and hard hammer struck with well defined negative bulbs of percussion where they survive the reduction process. Now patinated orange with the spotty inclusions now a lighter grey/brown, the high points of the flake scars are white where they have been abraded and rolled. All surfaces appear to be modified; no cortex remains. Lower Palaeolithic, 600,000 to 250,000 BC. Given the site, probably around the earlier date given.

Discoidal core, of slightly brown patinated dark grey/black flint with paler grey inclusions within the flint, all flake scars appear to be hard hammer struck centripetally from the edges, overlapping each other, one edge retains a small area of cortex. The condition is very slightly rolled, only the high points and the thin edges are slightly abraded. Lower Palaeolithic, c. 600,000 to 250,000 BC.

Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Probable core, of slightly dark patinated black and grey flint, all flakes are hard hammer struck from a fragment of a much larger nodule of flint, the core is thermally flawed; an internal crack runs across the middle of one face with the flakes removed from this area, indeed one large flake scar runs along this, the edge of the flake appears to be “channeled” by the flaw. The core has at least five flakes removed from it. Thin, worn cortex extant to one side. The condition is very slightly rolled, only the high points and the thin edges are slightly abraded. Lower Palae…

Core with the main platform formed by a thermal (frost) fracture, all flake scars are hard hammer struck around the circumference, creating a sub-cone shape, where the distal ends of the flake scars converge, at least four flakes have been struck from the “point” in the opposite direction of the other flakes, two to one side, two to the other. The flint is patinated pale buff with iron stains to the high points of the scars and to the main flat platform. Lower to Middle Palaeolithic, 600,000 to 40,000 BC.

Possible core, converging flakes to the dorsal face only, the ventral face is is natural thermal fracture, all dorsal flake scars appear to be distal terminations only, they lack the point of percussion. The flint is patinated orange with the ventral face less so, the darker flint showing through the mottled patination. The high points have been moderately rolled with the thinner edges battered with recent damage showing the original colour of the flint to have been dark brown/grey with paler, coarse inclusions. Possibly Lower Palaeolithic, 600,000 to 250,000 BC.

Core, in fairly fresh condition, of black flint with coarser grey inclusions with thin weathered cortex extant to both faces, the high points to the flake scars and the edges are slightly battered by rolling. All flake scars appear to be hard hammer struck, all have been removed from one face along both edges and both ends, seemingly as a single pass, the core seems to have been abandoned immediately after. Lower Palaeolithic, 600,000 to 250,000 BC.

Partially bifacial core of black to grey flint, in moderately rolled condition with battered edges and high points to the flake scars; with thin, weathered cortex extant to one face, all flake scars are hard hammer struck and are now thinly patinated with orange mottles. The few flake removals from the side with cortex is probably to set up platforms for the flake removals to the other face. Lower Palaeolithic, 600,000 to 250,000 BC.

Small multi-platformed core in relatively fresh condition, of black flint with paler grey coarse inclusions with slight mottled white patination to some parts of the surface, all flake removals appear to be hard hammer struck. One area of thin, grey to off-white weathered cortex remains to one side, all other parts are modified. Lower Palaeolithic, 600,000 to 250,000 BC.

Paleolithic to Neolithc flint core. Mottled grey-white on one side but in general has a orange-brown patina. Irregular shape. Bifacial flaking. Two parallel blade scars on one end and one on the reverse. At the other end and to the side is another blade scar. Two striking platform. Several removals for rejuvenation. Likely dates to the Paleolithic. Larget flakes early with smaller later removals.

Large multi-platform core, of upatinated black and dark grey flint, every face has been worked by mostly large hard hammer struck flake removals, only two small patches of cortex remain. One large flake scar has uncovered a small part of an echinoid fossil within the flint. Lower Palaeolithic, 600,000 to 150,000 BC.

Single edge, bifacially and hard hammer struck core in slightly rolled condition, of orange patinated flint with thin orange and white similarly patinated cortex, three main flake removals from one worked face and the other face has three main with three partial remnants of previously struck flakes.
