An Upper Palaeolithic flint blade, bifacially knapped, with both edges sharpened. It is asymmetrical, and the distal left side of the blade is almost bulbous as it is thicker than the rest of the object. The flint itself is grey-white in colour, with a very small amount of iron staining. Some cortex remains on the tip on the dorsal face, and a grey brown patina appears in patches on both faces.

An Upper Paleolithic blade, 119mm in length. This is a thick, high-backed blade with an abrupt end, which suggests that it may come from a two platform core. The striking platform is heavily abraded. In profile the blade is curved. The whole is patinated a chalky buff, with iron staining on the ventral face. There is some ventral edge damage or post-patination retouch on the left edge. It is likely to be very late in date, from around 28,000-9,000 BC.

Flint blade, probable Final Late Upper Palaeolithic straight backed blade (c.13,000BC-8,300BC); possibly Neolithic blade (4,500BC-2,100BC). Incomplete - both ends broken - the thin end recently, and the thick end in antiquity. Sub-rectangular in plan, tapering slightly in both planes towards the distal end; trapezoidal section; straight profile. Ventral surface - bulb broken off; modern damage at distal end. Dorsal - two large flake scars on the surface, and one flake creating a 90degrees backed edge along the left lateral edge (no retouch necessary) with some areas of modern damage; …

This artefact is a flint blade, broken at both ends, and measuring a maximum of 96 x 32 x 11mm. The dorsal scar pattern indicates it was one of a sequence of blades detached preferentially from one end of a blade core. The artefact is in reasonably sharp condition. Its natural grey colour is altered by a thin light brown staining which covers the majority of its surfaces. The most characteristic feature is the extensive secondary scarring visible along its edges. On the left edge, the dorsal surface is partially covered by invasive scalariform retouch scars, some up to 12mm in len…

Notched blade Late Palaeolithic Length 84mm, width 40mm, thickness 19mm. Bulb of percussion on the top of the ventral with very slight ripples emanating outwards. Blade running down two thirds of the length of the artefact on either side. (When looking at the dorsal side) The right side blade has slight evidence of retouch, with pressure flakes being removed from the ventral side. The left blade has pressure flakes removed from both the ventral and dorsal sides, two thirds of the way down this blade terminates in a semicircular notch (11mm wide, 6mm deep) that has been remo…

A flint blade flake (Prehistoric). No areas of retouch. Orange/brown/grey flint with thick patina, there are some rust spots present on the flint. Small area of cortex (approx. 5%) on the tip of the flake. There are three removal scars on the dorsal surface. The flake appears to have come from the top of the core ?a core rejuvenating flake. There is some modern edge damage present. Length: 56.42mm; width: 23.36mm; thickness: 7.76mm; weight: 11.61g.

An exceptionally large but broken flint blade of possible late Paleolithic or more probable early Mesolithic date (12000 -6500 BC). The blade is broadly sub-rectangular in shape and lentoid (crested) in cross section. The prepared striking platform and bulb of percussion are both present. The dorsal face shows a number of vertical flake scars (ridges / crests) formed by the removal of other flakes from a large core prior to the creation of this blade - all these removals have been caused by blades being taken in a similar direction. There is no evidence of retouch. The long edges o…

Late Upper Palaeolithic long blade soft hammer struck from an opposed platform core with nine long fluted blade flake scars converging on the dorsal face towards the distal end of this piece suggesting that the core from which it was struck was approximately 200 mm long. It is patinated with a mottled orange, brown and grey with one recent chip to one lateral edge revealing the mid-grey flint this blade was originally made from. There are small areas to both lateral edges that are finely use worn and are patinated. Long blades are an efficient way of producing long sharp cutting im…

Late Upper Palaeolithic long blade fragment with an ancient transverse bending fracture at the mid-point of the blade, and with the distal end is missing. Semi-soft hammer struck from an opposed platform core, with one bifurcated flake scar towards the break orientated 180 degrees from the rest, it is now patinated a light mottled grey with some recent chips revealing the original dark grey flint inside. 65 x 33.5 x 9.5 mm.

Late Upper Palaeolithic long blade which appears to be struck with a soft hammer from a single platform core. Flake directions are difficult to observe as the piece is heavily patinated white with some small areas of spotty iron staining. The proximal end is missing, broken recently and revealing unpatinated black flint. One lateral edge has been steeply retouched along its length at a later date, perhaps during the Neolithic or Bronze Age and has a light grey patination. Such re-use is uncommon, but not unknown. It shows that this piece had been lost or discarded and found several th…
