Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lower Palaeolithic end scraper knapped from a quartzite Bunter cobble from the Triassic period. The scraper is a sub-oval with the ventral surface having a possibly two flake scars at the proximal end, the scar has a step fracture. The dorsal surface has flake removal at the distal end which abrupt re-touch with at least four flake removals to form the scraping edge. There are no visible hammerstone marks on the surface, but the scraper is heavily rolled, therefore the flake scar edges are very blunt and curved. The scraper measures 72.99mm long, 68.01mm wide, 33.47mm thick and …

Object type: CHOPPER
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lower Palaeolithic bi-facial chopper knapped from a quartzite cobble from the Triassic period. The chopper is an sub-oval with flakes being removed from one terminal. One face has three flake scars and the other face at least two, but the details are not clear due to encrustation on the surface. There is only one hammerstone mark visible along an edge where a flake has been removed from the other face. The chopper has been very rolled, therefore the scar edges are rounded. The chopper measures 103.71mm long, 70.71mm wide, 43.68mm thick and weighs 462g. The object has been i…

Object type: CORE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lower Palaeolithic core knapped from a Bunter cobble from the Triassic period. The core is an irregular shape and has had flakes removed from multiple faces. A large flake scar covers the majority of one surface. The rounded edge of this flake scar is rounded, whereas other flake scars are fresher. This flake is horizontal, and along one side edge there is an obliquely angled fresher flake at the terminal of the cobble. This is one flake scar of three radiating from a striking platform at this terminal. There are two other, small flake scars which are positioned at the striking platfo…

Lower Palaeolithic core knapped from a Bunter cobble from the Triassic period. The core is an irregular shape and has had flakes removed from multiple faces. A large flake scar covers one surface. The striking platform for this flake removal was created by a medium sized flake being removed at right-angles. One terminal has had further flakes removed, at least three flakes which are contemporary to the first two. There is a smaller more recent flake scar at this terminal, but on the opposite face to the others. This scar has developed the same patina on the unworked surface as the oth…

Lower Palaeolithic core knapped from a bunter cobble from the Triassic period. The core is an irregular shape and has had flakes removed from multiple faces. Eight flakes have been removed revealing a mid brown-grey colour with an external surface being a mid brown colour. The edges of the scars are still fresh, suggesting it has not been rolled or weathered. There are two parallel larger scars which provides the striking platform for at least four others scars which are therefore perpendicular to the larger scar forming the striking platform. At the proximal end of the larger scars, …

Object type: HANDAXE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Worcestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A probable Lower Palaeolithic (500,000 to 40,000 BC) implement: handaxe. The axe is knapped from flint which is heavily patinated, and is a mottled bright brown-orange due to iron staining. The axe is incomplete or fragmentary, and the break is across the section revealing a sub-triangular section. The break is not too recent, but does have a mottled light yellow/beige colour. The implements' overall original shape is difficult to determine, but what remains is triangular. The axe is bifacially flaked with rolled edges. The flakes vary in size but reveal conchoidal ripples. The imp…

Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Warwickshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lower Palaeolithic (c.800,000-180,000 BC) bifacially worked andesite tuff handaxe. It is pointed in form with a pointed oval in cross-section. The tip is truncated, the surface of the truncation matches that of the rest of the axe, so is therefore not recent. The butt is slightly pointed, but off-centre. Both faces have covering, low angled and scalar retouch, although one lateral edge is a single abrupt face, which may be due to damage rather than design, although the surface condition and colouring matches that of the rest of the axe. The surface of the axe shows some patinat…

A probable Palaeolithic to Neolithic (400,000 to 2200 BC) debitage: flake. The flake has been removed from a larger implement/core which had a heavily patinated, and is a mottled bright brown-orange surface due to iron staining. A trace of this patination is visible along a lateral edge. The dorsal and ventral surfaces are only slightly patinated with a mottled yellow-brown colour, suggesting it has been produced through re-use. The ventral surface has a bulb of percussion with feint conchoidal ripples. The dorsal surface has a large negative scar. The flake measures 27.79mm length, 4…

A probable Palaeolithic (500,000 to 24,000 BC) implement: possibly a crude handaxe. The implement is knapped from a chert like flint and where it is not damaged, the surface is heavily patinated, and is a mottled bright brown-orange due to iron staining. The damage reveals a light beige, matte surface. The implements' overall original shape is difficult to determine due to more recent damage on both faces at the edge, but it is now a sub-oval, and is a sub-lozenge in the horizontal section. One face has a patch of unworked surface which looks abraded and is the original surface. Th…

An incomplete and abraded handaxe of probable Palaeolithic date. In plan the axe is broadly triangular in plan. In cross section the axe has a clear humped shape. The axehead is bi-facially worked although some of the flakes on both the dorsal and ventral faces are invasive with hinge fractures suggesting they are a result of uncontrolled 'natural flaking' through movement in the soil. The dorsal (upper) face of the axe has been worked in many differing directions and controlled flake scars can be seen in many places, there is visible cortex. The ventral (reverse) face has many heavil…

A possible Upper Palaeolithic flint chopper / tool, possibly dating to between 40, 000 BC and 10, 000 BC. The find consists of a sub oval piece of a light brown flint nodule. It has been formed from either a flake of a large nodule or from the nodule itself. The flint tool has been damaged by movement in the soil due to plough roll and as such is badly abraded. There is a small amount of evidence of direct percussion (conchoidal ripples) to the distal edge, to potentially form a serrated edge. However this could be the result of damage due to plough roll. The flint t…

A possible knapped flint Palaeolithic tool or flake. The fragment is knapped from flint which is a mottled light grey/cream colour, but where there is the original surface remaining it has developed a heavy patination, which is a age/brown colour. Only a fragment of the object has this heavy patination, but it is these areas which appear to be negative flake scars. On both scars ripples of percussion are visible. Otherwise the surfaces of the object are caused by recent damage. It weighs 14.15g. The patination, shape of the flake scars and ripples of percussion suggest this was knappe…

Face A of WAW-148C02 preserves evidence of 5 previous flake removals, the flake scars. These removals are generally indicative of centripedal flaking patterns, with the core rotating through the hands of the knapper. The scars of these flakes show broadly similar magnitude of damage e.g. abrasion of ridges between flake scars. This face of WAW-148C02 shows extensive ‘battering’ damage, in the form of a great number of incipient cones of percussion – the small marks that develop on flint as it impacts with other lithic materials, such as those shown within the dotted rectangl…
