A single flint probable waste flake (debitage) of uncertain prehistoric date. Description: The flake is roughly teardrop shaped with a wide base and striking platform. Clear conchoidal rippling and bulb of percussion, partly obscured by patination. Little evidence of secondary working or retouching. The heavy patination leaves the flake a white colour, suggesting the flint has been in the soil for a long time. Measurements: 43.01mm long, 28.77mm wide, 7.28mm thick and 8g in weight.

A bifacially flaked flint handaxe dating from the Lower Palaeolithic c.500,000-250,000 BC. Description: The handaxe is quite crude but is roughly pointed wide a wider rounded butt. It has been bifacially worked, with flaking covering both sides, this has been uneven however leaving one side much thicker than the other leaving it plano-convex in cross-section. The edges are defined by invasive, scaled, low angled retouch. Some of the flaking appears to be quite haphazard leaving hinge fractures. A large irregular flint secondary waste flake, possibly of early-middle Palaeolithic date c.250 000 BC to 150 000BC. Description: The flake is roughly sub-triangular, with heavy conchoidal rippling. it terminates at one end in a hinge fracture. Some cortex remains on the dorsal face. The flint is mottled grey-blue and white, there is substantial iron staining. Measurements: 68.95mm, 56.18mm, 21.96mm thick and 87.43g in weight. Discussion: This flint has no clear retouchand in some ways resembles a large crude thinning removal from a paleolithic handaxe but a bit to thick.

The tip of a bifacially flaked flint handaxe dating from the Lower Palaeolithic c.500,000-250,000 BC. Description: The handaxe survives only as a the pointed tip and is roughly pointed. It has been bifacially worked, with flaking covering both sides, this has been uneven however leaving one side much thicker than the other leaving it plano-convex in cross-section. The edges are defined by invasive, scaled, low angled retouch. Some of the flaking appears to be quite haphazard leaving hinge fractures and a large patch of cortex on one side. The Break is large and rounded and likely r…

Object type: BURIN
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A probable flint burin dating from the Upper-Palaeolithic to early Neolithic date, although earlier date seems likely. Description: The burin is formed from a small flake of pointed flake, with one long edge. The triangular point has a long edges with some flaking on, which actually has short scaled semi-abrupt retouch at the proximal end (end where the flake was removed) and short edge with scaled short abrupt retouching flattening this edge. A spall or burin removal from this retouched platform created by this crushing/flattening retouch. This burin retouch creates a small gaugin…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A large possible lower-middle Palaeolithic flint scraper. Description: The object is formed from an irregular flint flake triangular in cross-section. The dorsal face is quite high which helps form this cross section. The bulb of percussion on the reverse is fairly shallow although the discoidal rippling is very pronounced. There is a removal flake across where the bulb of percussion which suggest a level of shaping. The wide outside edge of the tool appears to be the working edge with short scaled abrupt retouch along a small section abutting the striking platform end. The rest …

Object type: CORE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint core of uncertain age possibly Paleolithic in date. Description: The core is roughly oval in plan with and a roughly semi-circular cross-section. It has substantial shaping removals off one face and two large removals on the other. The largest of these, which was produced with a pressure hinge fracture removal may have produced a rounded scraping flake. The striking platform of this flake had substantial flaking preparation before its removal. The core is a mid-caramel brown colour. Measurements: 65.9mm long, 44.36mm wide, 28.85mm thick and 86.23g in weight. Discussio…

Object type: HAMMERSTONE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint hammerstone of uncertain prehistoric date. Description: Is roughly semi-circular in cross-section. The hammerstone has large amounts of crushing at the rounded end and accidental removals along two faces indicating its use a a hammerstone. The flatter sides may have been prepared for its uses as a hammerstone as the intentional flakes helping flatten these edges. The edges of the flat end have also had intentional crushing to blunt the edges to make it safer to use, this can be described as invasive scaled abrupt retouch. The other sides are rounded and covered in cortex. h…

A bifacially flaked flint handaxe of cleaver form dating to the Lower Palaeolithic c.500,000-250,000 BC. Description: The handaxe has a rounded butt, wider middle and a blunt 'blade' end. It has been bifacially worked, with flaking covering both sides, this has been uneven however leaving one side much thicker than the other leavining plano-convex in cross-section. The edges are defined by invasive, scaled, low angled retouch. One side from the wide middle to the butt has been knapped straight with short scaled abrupt retouch retouch in a crushing manner to blunt edge. Some of the…
