Lower Palaeolithic, chert handaxe. This is a 'ficron' type handaxe which belongs to the Middle Acheulian tradition. The axe is sub-triangular in plan, with straight sides, a slightly rounded tip and a flat butt. The flat butt has been created by removing a single large flake from the ventral side, this maybe a later feature as the patina that has formed on this scar is a much lighter creamy-brown compared to the rest of the axe. Lithic implements
1) Six blades. Average size length 25mm, width 12mm, thickness 3mm. Two have one arise on the dorsal, the other four have two arises, only two retain the bulb on the ventral. Four have been truncated resulting in the loss of the Proximal end. Two have retouch down one side. Five have a light greyish brown flint, one is a dark greyish brown flint, all have a creamy patina forming. These artefacts date to the Late Mesolithic-Early Neolithic.
