Worked flint of deep brown/beige colour. There is working around most edges of the flake. When viewed from the ventral face, there is an extremely prominent bulb 'ripple' pattern, suggesting a forceful flake removal. The entire edge of the flake has been 'backed' or retouched by steep sided removals which blunt the edge of the flake. This backing is extremely prominent on the lower right edge when viewed from the ventral face where removals have completely blunted and thickened the edge resulting in a 9.5mm thick edge. The striking platform has also been worked with invasive scaled r…

Lithic point dating from the Palaeolithic to the Bronze Age. Its possible age covers a potentially vast span of time, from c. 100,000 years ago to c. 800 BC. The point is made on a triangular shaped flake, with evidence of invasive knapping on both faces and along the edges. There is a prominent bulb of percussion on the ventral face, which is suggestive of hard hammer knapping technique. The dorsal face features invasive large flake removals across the surface of the flake, with small 'retouch' along the right edge, and blunted retouch along the left edge. The flint is dark brown i…

Knapped handaxe of early to middle Palaeolithic date c. 500,000 years ago - 200,000 years ago. The tool is bifacial and ovate in shape, and features flake removals across a large portion of both faces. The proximal (butt) end is curved and the distal end is slightly narrower and is asymmetric in form, as one side is notched or shouldered whilst the other extends slightly higher and shows evidence of a breakage just to the side of the top-most point of the axe. The item is a pointed oval shape in section. The thickest portion of the tool is at the centre, tapering out in thick…

Flint flake point. The implement is ovoid/leaf shaped in plan, and tapers from the butt which is the thickect part of the item, to the point. The flake is somewhat thick throughout and the butt is formed from a large wegde shape, which seems to have no evidence of flaking present. It is possible that the flake was struck opportunistically, as there seems to be little preparation of the striking platform. The dorsal face features a prominent arris running down the centre. It was likely struck as a tertiary flake. There is semi-invasive flaking on the right side edge, where parallel …

Worked flint blade flake, possibly Mousterian. The flint is a very dark brown with some grey and cream coloured inclusions. It is roughly triangular or slightly 'S' shaped, tapering to a point at the distal end, where it curves slightly so that the point is bent at an angle. The implement was struck as a large flake from a core, possibly a Levallois core, and worked along the edges of both faces to produce a thinned edge. The dorsal face features the scars of at least three previous removals, as well as some smaller removals closer to the butt. The retouch around the edges is va…

A large flint flake likely removed during a lithic reduction sequence. The artefact is made of light grey flint, with some cortex remaining on the proximal end of the dorsal face. The ventral face is convex and smooth, and though it is difficult to locate ripples of percussion, it seems likely that this face was detached from the flint nodule during the removal process. The dorsal face shows evidence of previous flake removals, with the entire left edge showing evidence of a steep-sided abrupt removal. There is no evidence of retouch on the item, though it may well have been used a…

A flint flake likely removed during a lithic reduction process. The flake bears evidence of a bulb of percussion on the ventral face, with evidence of a faceted striking platform. There is a clean break on the left distal edge of the flake (when in ventral view). The dorsal face shows evidence of previous stepped removal fractures. There is little evidence of retouch, though there is perhaps a small localised portion on the distal edge of the dorsal face as the edge curves inwards and up again, forming a small 'inlet'. If this is retouch, it is perhaps evidence of fortuitous use of th…

A worked pointed lithic implement. The tool is a dark grey flint with lighter grey and beige coloured inclusions. The surface retouch and flakes show evidence of having been 'rolled' or abraded, whilst the edge retouch is somewhat sharper. One side of the artefact looks to have less flake scars and a generally smooth apperance, suggesting the piece was struck as a large flake from a core and worked predominantly on the dorsal face. The tool is sub triangular in shape and oval in cross section. There is evidence of flake removals on the dorsal surface, though near the distal end the…

A Palaeolithic flint handaxe, dating 500,000-250,000 BC. The flint is a mottled mid-light grey colour. The handaxe is pointed at one end and rounded at the other. The evidence of retouch seems to be mixed, with covering, scaled with parallel retouch in places and semi-abrupt to low angle. Some trace of recortication on the base of both sides. Handaxes like this were used throughout the Palaeolithic period (800,000-250,000BC). These tools are often believed to have been produced by early humans, such as Homo antecessor or Homo heidelbergensis. Dimensions: length: 140 mm; width: 72.33 …

Lithic handaxe, knapped from mid grey flint, of probable Palaeolithic date. Flakes have been removed from both surfaces to shape the axe, which is oval in plan. It has an elongated lenticular cross section with pointed edges. The edges of the axe are damaged and worn. The surface of the axe is a creamy white colour, however the grey flint can be seen on the more recent damage to the axe. The axe is 93.7mm long, 81.1mm wide and is 24.4mm thick.

Palaeolithic knapped flint cordate handaxe. The axe is sub-oval in plan, with a rounded butt end and point. There is a later fracture removing a large flake on one side side of the axe. In profile the axe is straight sided. The surface is predominantly covered with scars from flake removal, with increased level of removals around the butt end. There is a small amount of cortex surviving in the middle of one surface of the axe, however the majority of the surface is a light-cream to white colour due to heavy patination. Later removals caused by damage have a lighter patination, with ev…
