A bifacially flaked flint handaxe of cleaver form dating to the Lower Palaeolithic c.500,000-250,000 BC. The handaxe has a sub-rounded butt, wider middle and a blunt 'blade' end. It has been bifacially worked, with uneven flaking covering both sides leaving uneven surfaces and a plano-convex cross-section. The edges are defined by short, scaled, abrupt retouch. The blade edge is wide and clearly defined giving the axe a 'cleaver' form. The flint has a light-mid brown 'toffee' colour with some large patches of cortex present especially around one edge across to one side, and some iron …

A complete Lower Palaeolithic flint cordate handaxe in very good condition, dating from c. 500,000-150,000 BC. An elaborate tool with bifacial removals achieved by hard hammer percussion. Some recortifcation and post-depositional weather damage is evident with more recent damage to tip. The butt is trimmed and the point rounded. The raw material is buff in colour externally.

Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: West Berkshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A small waste flake (debitage) of unceratin prehistoric date. The flake is made on a light grey-brown flint as a result of soft hammer percussion. The platform is retained but there is no obvious bulb or fracture lines. The flake has suffered some modern damage. This flake is likely to be of later prehistoric date but it is not particually diagnostic; suggested date: Mesolithic - Bronze Age, c. 8000 - 800 BC.

A lower palaeolithic handaxe, dating from c. 476,000 - 421,000 BC. The handaxe has been made of a flint nodule that has a greyish-white outer colouring, likely to be from a chalk downlands source. Dating from the Anglian phase of the Lower Palaeolithic, c. 478,000 to 423,000 years ago, the hand axe has bifacial removals made using a hard hammer, such as another stone. Although the hand axe has some post-depositional damage and iron staining, it survives in very good condition. Based on the location of discovery this hand axe probably derived from the Caversham Channel, an ancient rout…

A lithic implement, possibly an Lower Paleolithic hand axe but it is also possible that it is a Late Neolithic 'Ovate'. Roughly flaked but with some finer retouch forming a point.

A complete pointed handaxe dating from the Lower Palaeolithic period (c, 500,000-40,000 BC). The handaxe is in good condition and appears to have been 'rolled', a reflection of its age and suggesting it has been in a high energy environment (such as a river) before its final deposition. The flint appears to be Chiltern flint, now being a reddish-orange in colour. Recortication is evident on the dorsal surface.

A probable Middle Palaeolithic handaxe. The handaxe is incomplete and was probably broken during manufacture or use, while one small area of more modern damage is evident. The handaxe is bifacially retouched, and a creamy grey core is covered by a thick orange patina, suggesting a gravel bed context or source, such as those known from Cassington, Oxon. The Devensian period at Cassington is well attested from evidence gained during gravel extractions. The period here dates from c.75,000BC to 35,000BC but this find is likely to have been redeposited from an earlier layer. The handaxe me…

A Lower (Acheulean) or Middle Palaeolithic handaxe dating from c.500,000 - 40,000 BC. This handaxe is similar to the Mode 2 Type F pointed handaxe (after Wymer 1999, Butler 2005) with a rounded point and trimmed butt. The handaxe is bifacial and has had all the cortex removed. It is very heavily patinated to a yellow-brown over a lighter brown/grey core. All ridges and removals are worn smooth probably due to water and glacial action. The butt displays possible post-depostitional frost fractures. This is a very nice example of a palaeolithic handaxe. It measures 145.97mm long, 74.35mm…

A Lower Palaeolothic handaxe made from a red-orange quartzite pebble with some retention of the outer cortex at the proximal end. Large bifacial flake removals evident, with smaller flaked removals at the distal end, but no further retouching is evident. The handaxe is 99.54mm in length, 70.56mm in width and 30.45mm thick. It weighs 262.8 gms and dates to the Lower Palaeolithic period, between 500,000 - 180,000 BC. Previously, no Lower Palaeolithic finds have been recorded in Leafield Parish - most sites of this period are identified on or close to waterways - Leafield village is betw…
