A bifacially flaked flint handaxe of cleaver form dating to the Lower Palaeolithic c.500,000-250,000 BC. The handaxe has a sub-rounded butt, wider middle and a blunt 'blade' end. It has been bifacially worked, with uneven flaking covering both sides leaving uneven surfaces and a plano-convex cross-section. The edges are defined by short, scaled, abrupt retouch. The blade edge is wide and clearly defined giving the axe a 'cleaver' form. The flint has a light-mid brown 'toffee' colour with some large patches of cortex present especially around one edge across to one side, and some iron …

A lower Palaeolithic flake dating to 800,000 - 250,000 BC, possibly Clactonian. The flake is sub-rectangular in shape and has a crested cross-section. This is a primary flake where the whole of the dorsal and ventral face are covered by a smooth light brown cortex with a rougher beige patina in some areas. There is short, scaled low angled retouch on both faces at the distal end, and in one corner of proximal end. The sides of the flake have short, stepped low angled retouch. Where there is retouch the cortex has been chipped away and has a light greyish brown patina, apart from on…

Both faces have invasive, semi-abrupt, scaled retouch. The sides of the fragment have short, scaled, low angled retouch. The distal end has an old break and a width of 28.3mm. The fragment then tapers outwards towards a wider butt which also has an old break with a width of 39.3mm. Both ends are lozenge-shaped in cross-section and are patinated with multi shades of grey and white patches. Both faces have a concave profile …

Both faces have invasive, semi-abrupt, scaled retouch. Around the sides of the whole handaxe there are short, stepped, low angled retouch. On one face at the wide rounded butt there are angled jagged breaks which are patinated with multi shades of grey and white patches. A complete pointed handaxe dating from the Lower Palaeolithic period (c, 500,000-40,000 BC). The handaxe is in good condition and appears to have been 'rolled', a reflection of its age and suggesting it has been in a high energy environment (such as a river) before its final deposition. The flint appears to be Chiltern flint, now being a reddish-orange in colour. Recortication is evident on the dorsal surface.

It is very heavily patinated to a yellow-brown over a lighter brown/grey core. All ridges and removals are worn smooth probably due to water and glacial action. It has been worked symmetrically across both sides and reduction scars are visible across most of the surface, with only very small patches of cortex remaining near the centre. The tool has been relatively crudely manufactured with greater reduction near the tip. The flint contains cherty inclusions and is typical of flint from this area. Orange iron staining covers the entire surface. The tool has been rolled with some edge damage, and is probably from a secondary context. Dimensions: length 1…
