A Middle Palaeolithic Devensian cordiform handaxe from Cassington, Oxfordshire. The handaxe is bifacially retouched but does display some more modern weathering damage including fracturing and spooling. A grey-blue core is covered by a thick creamy-yellow patina. The handaxe measures 74.81mm long, 64.99mm wide and is 19.83mm thick. It measures 86.7gms. The Devensian period at Cassington is well attested from evidence gained during gravel extractions. The period here dates from c.75,000BC to 35,000BC.

A Lower (Acheulean) or Middle Palaeolithic handaxe dating from c.500,000 - 40,000 BC. This handaxe is similar to the Mode 2 Type F pointed handaxe (after Wymer 1999, Butler 2005) with a rounded point and trimmed butt. The handaxe is bifacial and has had all the cortex removed. It is very heavily patinated to a yellow-brown over a lighter brown/grey core. All ridges and removals are worn smooth probably due to water and glacial action. The butt displays possible post-depostitional frost fractures. This is a very nice example of a palaeolithic handaxe. It measures 145.97mm long, 74.35mm…

A tertiary flake with buff-coloured patina. This flake has been retouched on both lateral edges and the proximal tip, and the bulb has been removed. The same thick patina seen over the dorsal and ventral sides of the flake can be seen over the retouched edges. There is a sub-circular notch fracture at the proximal end, although this appears to be natural. The patina on this flake suggests a date of great antiquity, possible dating from the Upper Palaeolithic or Mesolithic periods (c.300,000 - 4500 BC). This retouched flake may have been used as an end and side scraper. The flake's sha…

An unusual flint flake, with some limited retouch along the lateral edges and distal tip. The flake has a natural hole towards the proximal tip, but it does not show signs of human manipulation. The distal tip is hooked and appears to have occured naturally when the flake was struck from the core. Although the retouch is minimal, there are signs of human working, and this flake may have been utilised as a scraper or blade (one edge is quite jagged). The tool may have have been utilised as a piercing tool as the tip shows signs of being pressed hard against something and is crushed and …

A Lower Palaeolothic handaxe made from a red-orange quartzite pebble with some retention of the outer cortex at the proximal end. Large bifacial flake removals evident, with smaller flaked removals at the distal end, but no further retouching is evident. The handaxe is 99.54mm in length, 70.56mm in width and 30.45mm thick. It weighs 262.8 gms and dates to the Lower Palaeolithic period, between 500,000 - 180,000 BC. Previously, no Lower Palaeolithic finds have been recorded in Leafield Parish - most sites of this period are identified on or close to waterways - Leafield village is betw…

1 flint chip. A waste product from lithic working which exhibits the typical bulb of percussion and striking platform. The flake has not been retouched and is therefore undiagnostic and difficult to date. A broad date range of Palaeolithic to Neolithc has therefore been given.

Undiagnostic struck flint flakes often referred to as debitage. These finds represent waste flakes created during the knapping process and none could be dated with any degree of confidence although the suggestion was made that the white flint flake (top left in the photograph) is typical of the palaeolithic period. The overall weight of this group is 47.20g and comprises of 9 individual pieces.

The broken tip from a large flint 'long blade' implement. The flint is pale grey-blue in colour. The artefact has been provisionally dated to the final upper palaeolithic period (40,000 - 8,300 BC) although based on the tip of the blade alone this cannot be confirmed. The artefact measures 33.84mm long by 17.62mm wide, is 3.55mm thick and weighs 2.16g.

A Lower Palaeolithic pointed Acheulian lithic implement (handaxe) (500,000-40,000BC). It has been worked symmetrically across both sides and reduction scars are visible across most of the surface, with only very small patches of cortex remaining near the centre. The tool has been relatively crudely manufactured with greater reduction near the tip. The flint contains cherty inclusions and is typical of flint from this area. Orange iron staining covers the entire surface. The tool has been rolled with some edge damage, and is probably from a secondary context. Dimensions: length 1…

A large fragment of antler, probably Palaeolithic (500,00-8,300BC). The fragment contains three branches and part of the main shaft. Angela Houghton (Natural History Curator, Museum of Reading) has identified this as an antler from a very large Red Deer. She adds judging from the size it must be ancient probably Palaeolithic. There are no tool marks or signs of use present. Dimensions: length: 270.27mm; width: 126.12mm; thickness: 43.97mm; weight: 481g.
