Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A collection of Late Upper Paeleolithic material from several sites on adjoining areas of the Seven Sisters. The material was examined firstly by Jill Cook of the British Museum who suggested a Late Upper Paleolithic date and secondly by Matt Pope of ASE who agreed the dating was possible. The collection consists of 16 flakes, some with re-touch or use wear which were found erroding out of the edges of paths and bare patches of earth on the Seven Sisters. Due to foot and other traffic the flints are vulnrable to modern damage and snapping and are also at risk from cliff erosion. The …

Later Upper Palaeolithic flake (15,000-8,300 BC). The flake surface shows evidence cortex reforming giving an indication of the age of the flake, it is also patinated from light grey to white reflecting the deposition chalk downland. On the dorsal surface (upper face) there are arrises from previous flake removals and sign of platform preparation and at the distal end (tip) there is some natural cortex, giving a square end to the flake. The bulb of percussion can be seen on the ventral surface (lower face) and there is possible use wear on both edges. Weight: 11.69g, Length: 56.98mm,…

A rough chopper that appears to have two phases of use. The base appears to be a Early Paleolithic tool with evidence for large flake removals off a core. One side is smooth while the other has c.20% cortext remaining and large flakes removed from around it. It was possibly produced using a crude form of the Levallois core tecnique and dates to the Lower or Middle Paleolithic (600,000 - 40,000 BC). The remaining cortext and related removals are heavily patinated with orange iron staining and show signs of water smoothing typical of tools of this age. In addition there are later flake …
