Lower Palaeolithic, Acheulean, bifaced ovate flint hand axe. The hand axe is oval, and the thickest area about half of the way down. It is generally symmetrical in plan and profile with a slight S shape to the edge, more prominent on one side to the other. The axe is almost completely covered in shallow flake removal scars with evidence for more precise retouch around some edges. There is some small evidence of relatively modern edge damage particularly around the edges. The arises on both faces are slightly smoothed consistant with some post depositional wear but not long term rollin…

Palaeolithic Acheulian handaxe of ficron type with a long tapering point and large, partially worked, butt. The point is formed with invasive shallow flaking and is pointed oval in cross section. There are small areas of natural cortex remaining on one side. The point widens and thickens to the large lozenge shaped butt. The widening is a fairly consistant taper down the ficron but the thickness tapers gradually at first before stepping out more steeply half of the way down. The butt is large with some long, shallow flake removals on two sides and the base; the base also has areas of h…

A ovate biface, cordate type Lower Palaeolthic handaxe, from the Middle Achalean period dated to circa 250 000 year BP. It is a large handaxe which has a trimmed butt and is straight sided, the point has been broken off recently. It has soft-hammer reduction. The patination is similar in colour to another flint of this date which was found in the Ouse valley. This flint has not been highly finished, although it does have evidence of re-working. There is a flaw in the flint where probably the frost has started to scatter it.
