Bifacially knapped sub-rectangular core or crude handheld chopping tool, of pale grey flint with darker grey flint below the cortex, there are rusty iron scrapes and a few spots to both faces. One edge is thick, blunt and retains the patch of thin, weathered cortex, the shorter sides are different to each other; one is straight and has an edge slightly less than 90 degrees, the other is rounded in plan and has an edge c. 45 degrees. The edge opposing the thick edge is damaged by ancient, hinged flakes but the remaining original undamaged area between the hinges retains an edge c. 40 d…

Neolithic flint awl.
Made on a tertiary flake, mid-mottled-brown opaque patina. Unidirectional dorsal scars, plain butt, pronounced bulb. Distal end notched directly and indirectly to form a bec-like awl. Notches have been retouched slightly (short, abrupt, sub-parallel). Some retouch also exists on both lateral edges: short, semi-abrupt, scaler and direct on the left, inverse and more abrupt on the right.

A possible Levalloisian core flake / blade of most probable Neolithic date. The blade is rectangular in plan with a lenticular cross-section. The lower edge is broken - most probably in antiquity as the whole flint has the same mid-grey coloured milky surface patina. The flaking appears intentionally to have shaped the flint while still on the original core, creating a distinctive 'tortoise shell' flaking, typical of Levallois flint technology. The ventral face shows a prominent bulb of percussion indicating probable use of a hard hammer, likewise the striking platform is well prepare…

Undated flint point or arrowhead.
Light greyish-brown opaque patina. Tertiary piece, unidirectional technology. Facetted butt, hard-hammer struck. Abruptly retouched along both edges. Tip broken in antiquity, presumably impact damage. Possibly Palaeolithic but more likely Neolithic.

Neolithic flint combination tool.
Dark grey opaque patina. Made on a hard-hammer-struck flake. Piercer created on the distal end by truncations that were then abruptly retouched. The right lateral edge has also been retouched (short, semi-abrupt, stepped) into a scraper and the dorsal face has many orthogonally struck flake scars. The piece could be any date from the Late Upper Palaeolithic but is probably Neolithic or later.

Upper Palaeolithic to late Neolithic flint scraper on large struck flake, 40000 - 2351BC. 69mm in length, 47mm wide and 32mm thick with a weight of 100.9grams. The object has a sub rectangular form and cross section and it has a light grey opaque patina. It has been formed from what was part of a core although this large part of the core has become struck off as there is an extremely large butt on the piece, probably a misdirected blow. The piece has some long almost carinated retouch and has been abraded round the edges.

Probable projectile point trimmed from a hard hammer struck sub-triangular sectioned tertiary unpatinated flint flake. A most unusual stemmed point with steep retouch forming the constriction at the base (proximal end) and similar direct retouch to the dorsal edges of the leaf shaped blade. The date is uncertain. Stemmed points of broadly similar construction are recorded from the Late Upper Palaeolithic, although this piece is likely to date from the Early Bronze Age, a variation of Green's (1980) Sutton type A barbed and tanged arrowhead. 49 x 25 x 8.5mm .

Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: West Berkshire
Workflow stage: Published
A small waste flake (debitage) of unceratin prehistoric date. The flake is made on a light grey-brown flint as a result of soft hammer percussion. The platform is retained but there is no obvious bulb or fracture lines. The flake has suffered some modern damage. This flake is likely to be of later prehistoric date but it is not particually diagnostic; suggested date: Mesolithic - Bronze Age, c. 8000 - 800 BC.

Transect 15/16.
Probably Palaeolithic. Small sub-triangular tertiary flake with heavy off-white patination with patchy iron staining. Two recent chips reveal grey flint. Probably palaeolithic due to the thickness of the patination although otherwise undiagnostic. Unretouched. 58 x 25 x 7mm.
Neolithic. Large secondary flake with retouch down one side. 84 x 34 x 12mm.
Late Neolithic - Early Bronze Age small, circular tertiary 'thumbnail' scraper retouched on all edges. Diameter 23 - 25mm, 5mm thick.
Six Neolithic - Bronze Age flint flakes with retouch, edge wear or damage to edges.

Neolithic - Bronze Age blade (secondary) with notches at distal end and side. Some retouch / damage to edge.
Seven Neolithic - Bronze Age flint flakes, some with retouch / use wear / damage.
