An incomplete probable copper-alloy tanged chisel, or trunnion tool, likely dating to the Middle Bronze Age (c.1500-1150 cal BC). It has a light green-grey patina. It probably belongs to the metalworking tradition phase VIII - IX, which corresponds to Needham's (1996) Period 5; circa 1500-1150 cal. BC. In profile, you can clearly see where it has been heavily used on one edge. It is sub-rectangular in plan with the trunnions, projecting out 11.5mm and 6.5mm from the sides. However, it is missing its butt end, as there is a post-depositional break just above th…

A sub-paralellogram copper-alloy 'bun' ingot, of probable Bronze Age date. Especially considering its incompleteness, it is possibly related to another recent 'bun' ingot find: Record ID: CORN-E931FE - BRONZE AGE ingot (finds.org.uk). It has a mid grey-green patina (50%), and a dark grey patina (50%). Dimensions: Length (max), 72mm. Width (max), 47mm. Average thickness, 18mm. Weight: 346g.

Object type: FLANGED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Roughout of a Bronze Age flanged axehead. It has a dark bown-black patina (80%), and in parts, a mid blue-patina (20%), and seems to be suffering from Bronze Disease. It is an object that to its left side looks relatively intact, but to its right side, has noticeable pocking, indicative of where water entered the mould during casting, and so the axehead is misformed. Despite its clear miscasting, its form is still distinguishable. It is particularly interesting that such a miscast item should survive, considering most miscast metalwork would have been re-melted, and cast again. …

Object type: QUERN
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Possible quern fragment, likely from the base. It looks to be made from a pitted greenstone. Due to its findspot context, it is likely to be Iron Age in dating, although secure dating is impossible, given its fragmentary state, but it is likely to be of prehistoric-Iron Age dates. It still has evidence of a grinding surface, and the curvature around the edge of the grinding surface (where this surface meets the edge of the stone) suggests that when intact, the entire object was circular in shape. Using this curvature to estimate the overall diameter of the grinding surface, it wo…

County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A near complete cast copper alloy decorated flat axehead probably of Needham’s Class 3, possibly type b (Boreland) c. 2200-1900 BC. The axe is broken mid-blade with none of the butt remaining, making further diagnostics unobtainable. There are two grooves running down the centre of the blade on one side which thicken and flare before terminating before the blades edge. Measurements: Length 87.1mm, Width 88.7mm at blade, tapering to 40.6mm at break, Thickness 11mm at break, tapering to 3.9mm at cutting edge, Weight 277g.

An incomplete copper alloy socketed axehead dating to the Late Bronze Age (c. 1300-700 BC). The remains of the object consist of the blade edge and part of the body, which terminates in an uneven , diagonal, worn break leaving part of the socketed interior visible. The break is slightly higher on one side of the axehead than the other, thus the tapered sides of the body of the axehead are visible. The blade edge is curved but very worn. The axehead moslty has a green patina with patches of light grey corrosion product on the patina - this is typical of high lead content…

A flint flake of probable Neolithic - early Bronze Age (c. 4000-1601BC). It is sub-triangular in shape, and is has been struck off a tertiary flake as only a small amount of abraded nodule cortex remains at the distal end. At the proximal end is a large striking platform with a bulb of percussion on the ventral face. The ventral surface also has widely spaced conchoidal ripple marks. The dorsal face, has two negative flake scars from the removal of previous flakes in the form of blades or bladelets. Apparent small retouch on the dorsal face likely to be accidental damage rat…

A fragment of a Late Bronze Age copper alloy socketed axe head, probably dating to c. 950-750 BC. The surviving section comprises of the cutting edge, now highly abraded, and blade, with the mouth, loop and collar all lost to an abraded, but patinated asymmetric break. One of the faces has impacted damage, forcing the face into the socket and possibly suggests deliberate damage. The axehead is broadly trapezoidal in plan measuring 71.64mm in length and expanding from a 36.87mm width at a worn break to 47.61mm width at the cutting edge. The object is …

It is sub-triangular in plan and broadly rectangular in cross section. It is patinated green-brown with patches of very bright green. The surface of the ingot is very pitted, which is most likely due to air bubbles forming during the casting process. There are small, sub-circular holes on one face which would support this. The sides then narrow slightly beyond the stop ridges before flaring into a angle-sided, wedge-shaped blade with an asymmetrical, slightly curved cutting edge. The rear part of the axe (from the stop ridge to the butt) is sub-rectangular in plan and the side flanges of the butt are lozenge-shaped, tapering from the stop ridge to the end. The stop ridge is higher than the…

A worn and corroded, now incomplete probably Middle to Late Bronze Age palstave axehead of Transitional or Late type, dating to the Penard or Wilburton phase (MBA III to LBA I; c. 1100-900 BC). The butt and loop have been lost to an old break, beyond the point at which the flanges develop. Based on what survives, the flanges themselves have been abraded in places such that their original profile height cannot be replicated. The arrowhead is made from a tertiary flake of flint that is cream in colour, probably made from local beach pebble. Almost the entire arrowhead survives barring the tips of each barb and a small break at the tip which probably occurred when it was fired as the breaks have the same patination as the rest of the arrow indicating this occurred a long time ago. The fragment is broadly rectangular in cross section and measures 26.58mm in length. It has been loosely twisted, probably as part of decoration. The twist is regular which suggests this was part of the object when it was worn rather than occurring during later deposition. The fragment is ‘hooked’ in shape overall and weighs 8.35g. The break on the shorter end of the fragment appears to be cut. Dimensions: Length,&nb…
