Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A gold and copper-alloy penannular ring dating to the Bronze Age (1150-800 BC). The ring is circular in cross-section and tapers slightly at the terminals. One terminal is slightly wider than the other and the thinner is now exposed, revealing the copper-alloy core. The surface is undecorated. Dimensions: Diameter 15.22mm, weight 2.95g. Discussion: “The penannular ring belongs to a class of artefact which has been termed 'hair-rings' and 'ring-money' (Taylor 1980; Green 1988; Eogan 1994; 1997; Varndell 2001; Hobbs 2003; Meeks et al 2008; O'Connor e…

Description: A Middle Bronze Age gold composite penannular ring, possibly incomplete, probably dating to c. 1300-1150 BC. The object consists of two concavo-convex bands of gold sheet which appear to have been soldered together and curved around to form a loop, the latter left open. Dimensions: diameter 13.9mm; width 7.9mm; thickness 2.3mm; weight 3.26g. Discussion: Comparison to other artefacts of the same type would suggest that the present artefact formed the outer cover for a base metal or organic core, along with an inner gold sheet, cf. Found whilst metal detecting on cultivated land at a depth of 3 inches. Gold ingot of probable Bronze Age date. The find is a slightly bent cylindrical length of gold. One end is complete and flat, the other is slightly twisted and was probably broken by hammering a dent and breaking it across the thinnest place. Hammer marks are still evident.  Dimensions: Dimensions: 56.0mm in length; 3.8mm in diameter or thickness, 9.65g in weight. Discussion: A similar ingot was found in Horsham, West Sussex and is recorded on the PAS database as SUSS-66EEF6 (2008 T329), which was…

An incomplete Bronze Age to Medieval copper alloy awl, dating to c.1250 BC-AD 1500. It is incomplete because there is a small early break at one end. It is a long slim oval in form, but slightly wider towards one end than the other, sub oval in cross section with flatter sides. One end is pointed, the other probably also originally pointed but now jagged at the break. Both flatter sides have a wide longitudinal groove which echoes  the overall shape, more pronounced on one side than the other. Close to the break there is a chunk missing from the edge …

A fragment of a Middle to Late Bronze Age copper alloy spear head probably dating to c. 1550-800 BC. The fragment consists of the point of the blade. Dimensions: 51.2mm in length; 6.9 mm in width; 6.89g in weight. While many copper alloy awls are known from the Bronze Age, it is difficult to be confident about this particular item given that the shape of awls changed little over time. Therefore a Late Bronze Age to Medieval date is given (c. 1250 BC - AD 1500).  There are many exam…
