TREASURE CASE : 2003 T198
Penannular ring with narrow stripes of yellow and paler gold; the latter shows some black tarnish. The outer surface of the ring is very worn in patches, including the top of the hoop. The terminals are flat and display some tearing and 'pushing in', indicating that the piece may consist of a gold covering over a core of some other material (usually base metal). This was confirmed in the laboratory. There is a marked ridge internally, along the length of the hoop. There is some distortion of the striping (which is extremely fine), which could have occurr…

Description
Two joining fragments form a parallel sided strip, or ribbon. The whole is heavily disfigured by buckling and denting, including a sharp bend at the break Both ends are neatly squared suggesting that the complete object is present. One of the terminals is emphasised by a slight external beading. Prior to damage, the back would have been flat, while the front carries twenty-four very finely incised grooves aligned longitudinally.

TREASURE CASE : 2015 T76.
Description: A complete gold penannular ring. The object is circular in both shape and cross section with a narrow gap between the terminals which are flat ended. The surface comprises gold of a bright yellow colour decorated with narrow stripes of a paler silvery gold which can be clearly seen on the interior of the ring but are barely visible on the outer edge. The stripes appear fairly evenly spaced. While it is common for such objects to be formed around a copper alloy core there is no obvious visual evidence of it here.

TREASURE CASE : 2023 T312
A complete gold plated pennannular ring dating to the Bronze Age, c. 1000-800 BC.
Description:
A complete penannular ring, circular in cross section, with corrosion between the terminals. The corrosion likely indicates that it was made by covering a circular copper-alloy bar with gold sheet and hammering it flat, giving it the appearance of being made from solid gold. The ring was decorated with silver or silver rich gold wire, which covers the ring in a continuous spiral that provides a striped effect. Overall, it is in fairly good condition, but there are…

A decorated sheet of gold of probable Bronze Age date, c.1000 - 800 BC.
The object is formed of a thin sub-rectangular sheet of gold, folded over at one end. It is not possible to determine if the object is complete or cut down though the latter is likely. The front surface of the sheet is decorated by a series of sub-parallel indented grooves running along its length.

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
TREASURE CASE : 2021 T608
A probably complete gold mount probably of Early Bronze Age date, c.2150-1750 BC.
The mount consists of a sub-rectangular thin gold sheet that has been folded at least three times, into at least four layers. One outer layer consists of one terminal end of the mount. This end is rounded and tapers slightly before widening again into the main body of the mount. A fold, bending the mount completely back on itself, connects this layer to the outer layer on the opposite side of the folded mount. This outer layer continues to widen before a…

TREASURE CASE : 2016 T683.
A largely complete but damaged gold armlet of Early Bronze Age date, c. 2100 BC - 1900 BC. It is decorated with embossed patterns and pointillé and belongs to the embossed goldwork tradition (see Needham 2000a).
The object is formed from a cylindrical band of sheet metal with no joins in evidence. In cross-section it has a corrugated appearance with six bulbous concentric embossed ribs, four decorating the body and two forming the rims. One rim has been damaged and the embossed rib is only partially visible. The ribs are fairly evenly spaced, separat…

A neatly-worked plain circular solid gold ring of hexagonal cross-section. The inner lightly-convex face bears a distinct wear-shine. There is only slight damage on the other faces.
This massive ring looks as though it may have formed the linking component of a composite object or suite of fittings. However, it is insufficiently diagnostic in appearance to assign either a specific function or a cultural affiliation.
Date: Uncertain, probably ancient.

Description:
The artefact is sub rectangular in shape, with tapered long edges. It has a flat cross section. Both short ends are incomplete and appear cut. The long edges exhibit nicks and cuts. No decoration is present on either the obverse or the reverse of the sheet.
Dimensions:
Length: 19.2 mm
Width: 8.1 mm
Thickness: 1.1 mm
Weight: 1.8 g
Discussion:
Thin sheets of gold are used in the Bronze Age to produce ribbons and bracelets, such as 2021T768 (WMID-804501). These however tend to display longitudinal ridges over the obverse. This example does not display any decoration.

Description:
A fragment of gold sheet foil with a series of decorative applied repousse marks presented on the outer face. Due to the condition and the small size of the fragment the overall design is unclear. The sheet has been folded into two and it is difficult to establish if this is deliberate and post depositional or later damage in the ploughsoil. What remains of the decorative design consists of a series of nine circular pointille bosses formed with a round headed punch or awl that has been worked from the underside to create the form. These bosses are arranged along one long…

An undatable worked strip of gold, reminiscent in shape of a medieval strap-end or possibly a pendant Bronze Age in date. One end (the wider, 9.6mm wide) is broken (recent-ish) and the strap then tapers to an end 4.2mm wide with a broken loop (also recent-ish) projecting from it (internal diameter c.2.2mm). The long edges are finished. One face has an indented line flanking the long edges and curving round behind the projecting loop. Measures 32.3mm in length and weighs 1.24g. It is rather dented in places and the finder says it was folded when he found it. He thought it was a piece o…
