Object type: SWORD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A damaged fragment from a Late Bronze Age sword. The fragment is from the upper mid-blade towards the tip, but is missing the sword's point. As such it is broadly trapezoidal in plan and lozengiform in cross-section. The object has bent bent and now has a shallow serpentine profile. It has corroded to a light, dusty blue-green colour with numerous scratches and pits. It is likely to be from the late Wilburton or, most likely, Ewart Park phases of the Bronze Age.

Object type: RIVET
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A rivet cast in copper alloy with a circular cross-section and domed terminal. The end opposite is slightly lipped, although not domed in the same way as typical Bronze Age rivets. This notwithstanding, the possibility exists that the rivet is Late Bronze Age in date, coming from a sword or dirk. The artefact has a mid-green patina with some pitting.

A gold Bronze age bracelet. In its current form, this is a roughly annular band with a small overlap. One end is a slightly thickened terminal of thin crescentic shape, the other is a thin, wavy edge most likely the product of the reworking of a broken end. It can be assumed that the original form was a penannular bracelet with two matching thickened terminals and a broad gently C-shaped band section, which survives in the reworked form. Remodelling after the loss of one terminal involved pulling the two ends together to overlap and tying them together with a thread (not surviving) pa…

A Bronze age strip of sheet gold which long, cigar shaped with squared off terminals. At either end is a set of three small perforations set in a triangle. These are roughly circular piercings with evidence for rotational action in their formation; the tiny lips of metal pushed through to the reverse have been crudely doubled back and flattened. There is no evidence for decoration. The strip has many transverse creases consistent with it having been rolled up and crushed flat (see above circumstances). The main additional damage is a repeating pattern of rounded hammer dents of varied…

Small penannular gold ring of sub-circular section with decorative narrow banding in yellow and paler gold; corrosion of the silver-rich stripes has caused blackening in places. The external surfaces are patchily worn. The gap is bridged by green corrosion products probably deriving from a base metal core. External diameter 14mm-15mm; internal diameter circa 7mm; breadth 4.5mm; width of gap circa 2mm; weight 4.13 grams. Composition Surface analysis indicated gold and silver contents od approx. 57% and 40% respectively. Identification A well known Late Bronze Age type, d…

Small, plain penannular gold ring of flattened oval cross section; the ends taper slightly to flat terminals. Examination in the laboratory indicated that the object has a base metal core. External diameter 15.5x14mm; internal diameter 4.5mm; breadth 6mm; weight 6.18 grams. Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface of penannular ring from 'Havant area', Hampshire, indicated a gold content of 76 - 79 %, silver content of 16 - 18 %, the remainder being copper. The ring weighs 6.18 grams and the specific gravity measurement of 9 indicates that it has a base metal core.

Penannular gold ring with hoop of circular cross-section; original decorative banding in broad stripes of yellow and paler gold are very worn and best perceptible near inner surface. Roughness of gold at one terminal could be due to damage. The surface is heavily worn; scores and scrapes are likely to have occurred post-depositionally. Visual inspection suggests that the piece comprises a gold covering over a base metal core. Diameter 18-18.5mm; internal diameter 6.5mm; breadth 6.5mm; weight 9.51 grams. A fragment from a cast copper-alloy axehead of Late Bronze Age date. The fragment consists of the lower blade and includes an abraded, expanded cutting edge. The axehead has been broken in an abraded curve just above the socket end. Also visible are the sides above the socket end, one of which survives as far thicker than the other. The distance between socket end and cutting edge can be measured at c. 22mm. The object is highly corroded. It is largely a light, dusty green colour, but with some blackened areas. CORONER'S REPORT Description of object A Middle Bronze Age cast copper-alloy socketed hammer (c. 1400 - c. 1150 BC). It has a sub-rectangular mouth with single collar moulding leading to a square section and a slightly curved, smooth and worn terminal with flared edges presumably due to repeated impacts rather than design. It has a brown patina with light green corrosion.

CURATOR'S REPORT Description of object A Middle Bronze Age cast copper-alloy looped palstave axehead (c. 1400 - c. 1150 BC). It has a narrow square butt, low tapering flanges, slight lip on the stop-ridge with a complete loop adjoining. This leads down to narrow body divided by single midrib finishing with a slightly flared blade. The artefact has a brown patina with light green heavy corrosion and chipping. It can be classified according to Rowland's (1976) scheme as Class 5 Group 1 (ibid. 1976, 34-36).

A virtually complete cast copper-alloy flat axehead of Early Bronze Age date. This flanged example is characteristic of the Arreton Park metalwork assemblage. A pair of corroded cast copper-alloy awls or tracers of possible Bronze Age date. The artefacts have a thicker body with circular cross-section that tapers to a point. The probable tip from a Bronze Age cast copper-alloy spearhead. The fragment is triangular in plan lozengiform in cross-section, with rounded corners. The tip is now very blunt and rounded and the edges are now flattened rather than bevelled. The old break is irregular. The metal has corroded to a variable mid-green colour and suffers from pitting in places. Unfortunately with so much of the artefact missing, it is very difficult to tell the phase of the Middle/Late Bronze Age to which it belongs.
