Object is an incomplete, small, copper alloy flat axehead, probably dating from the Early Bronze Age period (c. BC 2350 - c. BC 2050). The axe is broadly rectangular in plan with a slightly splayed crescentric blade. The sides of the axe gently taper outwards with a shallow curve, from the rounded butt to the blade. The surfaces are flat and do not show any signs of side flanges. The axehead has suffered significant loss from corrosion on all surfaces, and is pitmarked and edges worn and rounded. It has an overall browny red and green patina. There are several…

Object type: FLAT AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper-alloy early Bronze Age flat axehead. All that remains is the blade end, which is flared and roughly triangular in shape. The worn and corroded cutting edge is crescentic in form, extending beyond both sides of the axe. The surface is badly corroded with little of the original patina remaining.  This is the blade end from an incomplete axe of Bronze Age date. Its form, size and lack of flanges suggest it is a flat axe rather than a palstave and as such it dates to the Early Bronze Age, c.2150-1500 BC. Length: 66.35mm Width: 62.66mm Thickness: …

An incomplete copper alloy Bronze Age flat axehead dating from the Early Bronze Age, about  2400 - 1600 calibrated BC. It is incomplete and very damaged, so only small areas of the original surface survive. They are decorated on both faces with short sub-parallel and irregular lentoid grooves (rain pattern). They are at an oblique angle, and those near the butt are angled the other way to those nearer the blade end. Both the butt and the cutting edge are missing. Measurements are; length 70.8mm, width 46.3mm, thickness 9.6mm and weight 87.80g. The damage prevents the axe being mor…

A complete flat axe-chisel or narrow bladed chisel dating from the Early Bronze Age, c. 2200 - 1800 BC. The body of the object is near-parallel with straight sides which very slightly tapers towards the head. Flanges can be found on each side of the body. The body is lentoid in cross-section for a short portion before it transitions to sub-rectangular. A possible proto stop ridge is visible at the point where the blade expands. The axe splays at the blade which comprises a flat flared crescentic blade that is an elongated hexagon in cross-section. The blade ed…

A near complete cast copper alloy decorated flat axehead probably of Needham’s Class 3, possibly type b (Boreland) c. 2200-1900 BC. The axe is broken mid-blade with none of the butt remaining, making further diagnostics unobtainable. There are two grooves running down the centre of the blade on one side which thicken and flare before terminating before the blades edge. A complete cast copper alloy flat axehead or chisel. There is some damage to the cutting edge and the butt. The butt is narrow and angled at the end. The axehead is elongated with long, low-flanged sides which flare out from the butt to the curved cutting edge. The flanges start at the butt and increase slightly in height to the mid.point of the axehead before decreasing in height until stopping around 1 cm from the cutting edge. The side profile is pointed oval. The transverse profile is a shallow H-shape. There is no evidence of a stop-ridge. The surfaces are all heavily pi…

An incomplete Early Bronze Age cast copper alloy flat axe of undeterminable type, dating from c. 2200 to 1800 BC. The axe is incomplete due to surface loss. It has a surviving length of 76.79mm. The blade end is crescentric in shape, it has a surviving blade width of 44.79mm.  From the blade, the body of the axe narrows in shape, and terminates in a rounded butt. The axe is broadly lenticular when viewed in profile, although heavy corrosion has altered its shape. The axe has a heavily textured surface caused by corrosion; it is copper-green in colour with areas of reddish brown…

A fragment of a flat axe-chisel or narrow bladed chisel dating from the Early to Middle Bronze Age, about 2200 - 1000 BC. The fragment consists of the axe's cutting edge above which is a patinated jagged break. The axe fragment is sub-trapezoidal in plan with the sides being slightly concave. The blade is an asymmetrical convex crescent with faint bevels. The broken edge of the axe runs transversely across its body giving an irregular oblique edge at one end. In cross section the body of the axe is rectangular as revealed by the break. The cross-section at the blade…
