Copper alloy socketed axehead fragment. The cutting edge and the associated outer part of a socketed axe, with scant inswing discernible from the cutting edge to the upper and lower sides. Robustly cleaned by the finder, possibly resulting in the rounding of fracture surfaces and the blunting of the blade itself. The identification is suggested by the cavity behind the cutting edge and between the sides of the fragment. Suggested date: Late Bronze Age, 1000-800 BC. Height: 34.2mm, Length: 24mm, Weight: 24.41gms

Copper alloy possible socketed axe fragment. Possibly a fragment from the mouth of a socketed axe; if so, subsequently partly melted in the course of recycling. Presented together with other unburnt socketed axe fragments, ingots and metalworking debris. If from the same find-spot, these might comprise scrap from a metalworkers hoard, and as such would constitute Treasure under the 1996 Act. However, it is uncertain whether their presentation together signals their identical find-spot, or an origin from among less interesting objects and scrap from a wider area. Suggested date: Late B…

Copper alloy socketed axe fragment. A fragment from the mouth of the socket of a small socketed axehead. Presented together with another socketed axe fragment. Copper alloy socketed axehead fragment. Cast fragment from the ribbed side of a probably square socket, part of a socketed axehead. A further vertical rib appears next to the socket mouth. Broken on all other sides. Presented together with other fragments which, if from the same location, would qualify as a hoard under the Treasure Act. However, the location may rather be a catch-all designation for unlovely material gleaned from a wider area. Complete cast copper alloy, plain socketed axe dating to the Bronze Age. The axehead has a narrow sub rectangular body, with 2 concave faces flaring towards the blade end. The blade flares out slightly to form a crecsent shaped cutting edge. It has a thin raised collar on the socketed end, and the loop is still intact. The axe has a brown and green patina, and is showing signs of wear and corrosion on all faces. The axe weighs 230.3g and is 94.21mm in length and is 43.42mm in width.

A fragment of cast copper-alloy bronze age object, probably South Eastern type socketed axehead, dating to the period c.1000 - 800BC. Description: The fragment is roughly L-shaped in profile, with the surviving outside edges being heavily polished and slightly convex. This latter point suggests it represents part of the body of the axehead. The internal sides is unfinished and rough, with swelling towards the centre slightly. It is noticeable that the fragment's walls are impractically thin. It has a very dark-grey green patination. Measurements: Height 31.76mm, Width 50.49…

Extremely worn fragment of a cast copper alloy socketed axe dating from c. 1100-800BC. It is a blade fragment, but very little of the cutting edge and lower body of the axe survive. All surfaces re extremely worn and no further identification is possible unfortunately. It is likely that it is an axehead that was part of the Late Bronze Age Wilburton or Ewart Park metalwork assemblages. Length is 40mm, width 20mm, thickness 8mm, and weight 17.77g.

Cast copper alloy blade fragment of a socketed axe dating from the Late Bronze Age, c. 1000-800BC. Only the very lowest part of the body and blade section survive. The surfaces are pitted and worn, but the casting seams along the sides were flattened and there is wear and resharpening marks along the blade section suggesting that it was repeatedly used and resharpened during use. It was, in all likelihood, plain or decorated with just ribs, but the type is uncertain: the fragment is too small to be certain. The wall on one side appears to be thicker that on the other suggesting that t…

An incomplete, worn and damaged Late Bronze Age to Early Iron Age socketed axehead, dating to c. 800-700 BC. Part of one lateral surface survives in respectable condition while the other is badly damaged with only c. 25% of this surface surviving. Any possible collar is also missing, along with the entirety of the open end. The hollow socketed form is clearly visible due to the break. The cutting edge is also badly worn and appears distinctly rounded. The body of the axe is narrow and slender, and does not flare to the cutting edge. In profile, the axehead appears triangular and …

Blade fragment of a cast copper alloy socketed axe dating from the Late Bronze Age, that is c.1000 to c.800 BC. The blade fragment is in good condition, but due to its size it is difficult to ascertain a type. It is most likely from a plain or ribbed socketed axe, which were common tools throughout Britain in the later Middle Bronze Age and Late Bronze Age. The fragment displays flattened casting seams and there are work and resharpening marks along the cutting edge suggesting that it was prepared, finished and repeated used and resharpened prior to destruction and deposition. A late bronze age socketed axehead which retains a portion of wood within the socket. The axehead is of a late Bronze Age type probably attributable to the Ewart Park Metalworking Industry, (c. 1000-700BC) with a single sideloop near the socket and three moulded ridges to each side of the blade which run half way down to the cutting edge. There is corrosion damage to the socket end on one side which has resulted in three fragments breaking away; they are however retained (2nd image).
