An incomplete copper alloy socketed axehead dating to the Late Bronze Age This remaining fragment is rectangular in plan with a triangular side section. It is hollow. The sides are parallel. It is broken near to the blade and therefore no details remain of any ribs, flanges or other features.  The surface is red-brown in colour where the original surface remains (about 30%) but rough green and brown where damage has removed this. The lack of surface detail and side loop make definitive identification difficult. However, given the form of the sides the axehead …

An incomplete copper alloy socketed axehead dating to the Late Bronze Age (c. 1300-700 BC). The remains of the object consist of the blade edge and part of the body, which terminates in an uneven , diagonal, worn break leaving part of the socketed interior visible. The break is slightly higher on one side of the axehead than the other, thus the tapered sides of the body of the axehead are visible. The blade edge is curved but very worn. The axehead moslty has a green patina with patches of light grey corrosion product on the patina - this is typical of high lead content…

An incomplete copper alloy socketed axehead of late Bronze Age date (c 1000 - 800 BC) corresponding to the Ewert Park metalworking phase (Needham’s (1996) Period 7). The surviving portion of the axehead is 53mm in width and 43.9mm in length, comprising the front end which has a flared, semi circular blade, with pointed ends. There is no evidence of any decoration or casting seams; however most of the original surface has been lost to corrosion. The break across the axehead reveals the interior to be hollow and the cross section to be of a sub rectangular shape.
