Complete unlooped copper-alloy Middle to Late Bronze Age palstave axehead. The H-shaped hafting channels at the butt are in good condition, with most of the original edges surviving on all four flanges. The butt narrows before a worn transverse break. The (abraded) stop ridge is slightly higher than the flanges. The septum is 57.1mm long. Beneath the stop ridge on both faces is a moulded shield-shaped pattern, bisected by a prominent longitudinal ridge creating a trident pattern. The ridges fade before the cutting edge. The crescentic cutting edge is jagged and abraded. There are no ca…

A copper alloy (bronze) palstave of Middle Bronze Age date, probably of the Acton Park II/Taunton metalwork style (c. 1400-1250 BC). The cutting edge has a crescentic form with the tips recurving back onto the expanding form of the blade, though one side is more pronounced than the other. The maximum heights of the flanges on both sides are taller than the stop ridge height, with the flanges forming a leaf-shaped pattern when viewed from above. The septum is U-shaped and is largely flat, though it tapers towards the butt. There is a casting pit on one side against the stop ridge. …

Complete side looped Palstave axe, of Rowlands, M. J. (1976) class 2, group 1 trident, mid-green patination with areas of surface pitting, smooth surface in between. The flanges to the butt are set low and straight, starting to rise from the surface approx. 1/3 of the length of the septum, the highest point being where the flanges meet the stop ridge (32.9 mm), The blade is relatively narrow, hardly expanding at the cutting edge at all, the cutting edge itself is blunt, this and the lack of cutting edge expansion indicate this axe may have never been sharpened, though the condition of …

A complete Bronze Age copper-alloy, unlooped palstave. Probably dates to 1700 to 1300BC, when similar geometries were prevalent (BM Occcasional Paper 102 - Taunton, Acton, Arreton). The blade of the palstave is sub-trapezoidal in plan with straight sides and flared blade tips. The blade edge is abraded, and blunt. There is a deep stop on both faces of the septum with flanges running down each side of the septum. The butt has broken ends, and would probably have originally run to more of a point. Part of a cast, flat copper alloy palstave, dating to the Bronze Age. The axehead is small and relatively narrow. It is broadly sub-triangular in plan with a rounded blade. The cutting edge has a width of 34.9mm and a thickness of 4.8mm, appearing to have been chipped or damaged. From the cutting edge, the body of the axehead gradually narrows, linearly, with the faces and edges all being slightly curved. The axehead also gradually gets thicker towards the end of the piece. The butt has been damaged and broken off, the fracture measuring approximately 25m…

An incomplete copper alloy palstave from the Middle Bronze Age dating c. 1400-1150BC. The object is broken around the raised stop ridge, just before the narrow blade, which flares out slightly.  The cutting edge of the blade is missing.  Just below the stop ridge is traces of shield shaped decoration. Ed Caswell notes that this could be either secondary or transitional phase (1400-1150 BC) since the blade is quite narrow, but it is difficult to be certain without the haft. A fragment of a copper-alloy palstave dating from the early to the middle Bronze Age( c.BC 2500 to 950) (possibly group III). The copper alloy fragment is a sub rectangle with one terminal being broken, but not recently. This end reveals that the body is voided, possible from corrosion. The opposite edge is wider and has a blunted edge. The upper and lower surface of the fragment has an incomplete matte mid green patina. Due to the object bing fragmentary, it is difficult to give a precise date. The fragment measures 33.8mm in length, 29.1mm in width and 7.7mm thickness and weigh…
