Gold metalworking debris. A small plano-convex pellet of solidified gold melt which has set on a flat smooth surface. A reddish tint suggests a significant presence of copper in the metal mix, making this a rose gold. Suggested date: Unknown, Bronze Age to Modern, 2350BC-AD1950 Length: 9.1mm, Width: 5.6mm, Thickness: 2.9mm, Weight: 0.80gms

Copper alloy metalworking debris. An oval fragment of solidified copper alloy melt of plano-convex section, possibly from the casting ingate at the top of the mould used for casting a small object. The oval flat surface would represent the upper side with shrinkage lines resulting from the cooling of molten metal. The ingate would be broken from the object cast and was presumably intended to go back into the melting pot. This is an unusual example of metalworking debris whose form places it at a particular stage of the casting process, rather than the more common evidence for spillage.…

An amorphous glob of gold, that survives as evidence of gold working of an uncertain date. Description: The gold is very pure, with a slightly pitted surface of a solidified fluid. One end of the glob is larger and heavier with a long neck to a small round terminal. Discussion: The high purity, pitted surface and solidified fluid form confirms that this gold has been (re)worked rather than being an example of a naturally occurring nugget of gold ore. As the gold is undiagnostic and cannot be proven to be more than 300 years old, the object does not qualify as Treasure.

Copper alloy metalworking debris. A massy chunk of dribbled copper alloy melt which has set and accumulated on a flat surface. Two small [length 10.7mm] fragments of charcoal are trapped in the lower surface, which might suggest the process of smelting or recycling – the latter must be more likely in an area devoid of cuprous mineral resources. The vicinity has produced several substantial pieces of solidified melt and may mark a focus of non-ferrous metalworking. Suggested date: Unknown, Late Bronze Age to Medieval, 1000 BC-AD1500 Length: 96.7mm, Width: 73mm, Thickness: 28mm, W…

Copper alloy metalworking debris. A fragment of solidified eutectic copper alloy melt which has  congealed on a flat and probably finely sanded surface, probably waste from the casting of an object. A small quartzite chip is also trapped in the upper surface. The vicinity has produced several substantial pieces of solidified melt and may mark a focus of non-ferrous metalworking; the implied use of a sand bed may mark this as waste or spillage from a scheme of professional works. Suggested date: Unknown, Late Bronze Age to Medieval, 1000 BC-AD1500 Length: 75.5mm, Width: 39mm, Thic…
