Part of a stone pebble, a micaceous metamorphic rock. It seems to be a natural pebble, oval in section, thickening and widening towards the broken end. The complete end is rounded. It is slightly curved in profile with a concave top and convex base. There appears to be some use polish on the concave top. It is 84.0mm long, 56.7mm wide at the break and 40.4mm thick; it weighs 225 grams. It is not a local rock but pebbles of many types of rock are found locally in rivers and estuaries brought in by water and glacial action. Whetstones are known to have been used from the Bronze Age o…

Object type: BORER
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Distal end of a Portland chert flake. There are short, shallow, scalar removals forming blunting retouch or damage along the left edge on the dorsal face and along the distal end of the left edge on the ventral face. The blunt point between them also has short scaler to parallel retouch creating a crude tool, probably an awl or borer. It is 27.9mm long, 22.6mm wide and 5.5mm thick; it weighs 3.65 grams.

Object type: PERFORATED OBJECT
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete perforated pebble hammer or mace head. A small sub-rectangular shaped and polished stone tool with an approximately central straight sided circular perforation. There is some damage to one face of the implement. The stone is an igneous doloritic greenstone of medium grain (Pers comm. Roger Taylor, Geologist at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter). The nature of the perforation indicates it was drilled using a hollow drill. This is quite small for this type of tool, and its function is not certain. Date: Bronze Age (Pers. comm. Steve Minnitt, Somerset County Museum…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE

A large and thick flint end scraper of probable early Bronze Age date. The scraper has been made from a secondary waste flake. At the proximal end is the striking platform. Below this on the ventral surface is a bulb of percussion and a bulbar scar. There are a number of flaking scars on the dorsal surface and the distal end has been retouched. This end is quite worn and the dorsal surface overhangs the ventral surface, suggesting heay use and possibly reworking at some point. The mottled light to dark brownish-grey flint has a mid-gloss patina. Dimensions: 59.2mm by 51.2mm by 24.3m…
