A Bronze Age bone awl, probably dating to the period 2150 BC - 800 BC. One end of the bone retains the distal condyle while the other has been narrowed to create a pointed tip. The tip would have been used to pierce other materials. The front of the awl shows a lower recess created removing part of the bone which reveals a inner chamber. Just above the recess there is a decoration composed by three incided and trasversal lines. Part of the decoration is not visible due to an old circular break of the bone. Both sides of the recess is a small groove. The reverse part is smooth with …

A worked bone point, possibly intended for use as an awl or similar item, of uncertain date. It is formed from an elongated bone of uncertain form, possibly a metatarsal or similar. At one end the bone has been filed to create a broad point that is triangular in profile and has a flattened rectangular tip. All surfaces towards the tip end have evidence of both transverse and longitudinal tool marks and are smoothly polished, perhaps as a result of use-wear. The entire object has a lustrous dark brown patina with some slight post-depsositional damage to the surviving joint end that has…

Object type: NEEDLE
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Greater London Authority
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A needle made from animal skeletal material - bone, probably dating late Bronze Age to Roman. The base of the needle is bulbous and has a circular, hourglass perforation. After the perforation the needle tapers down to the points. The surface of the needle is highly polished due to use/wear. Alan Pipe notes: the needle has been made from a slab of bone from the mid shaft of a long bone from an animal such as cattle, horse or red deer. If this is prehistoric it is more likely to have been made from red deer. MacGregor (1985: 193) discusses bone needles and he notes that the siz…
