Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a cast copper alloy socketed axe dating to the late Bronze Age  (1100 BC - 800 BC), comprising a corner of the socket. The profile of the socket appears subrectangular and is surrounded by a thick rim with a moulded collar 9.6mm thick which has a triangular cross section. A side loop, 19mm in length, is present on the remaining portion of the side of the axehead and there is a visible casting seam running along it, from the rim to the break.

Object type: DIRK
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small, incomplete and extremely corroded cast copper alloy dirk, of early to middle Bronze Age date, probably part of the Arreton to Taunton Metalworking assemblages. The blade is pointed, tapering with concave sides to a point. It has clearly been subject to extensive and repeated re-sharpening over a prolonged period and now retains little of its original form. The rear edge is rounded and incomplete with traces of a pair of flanking and now broken rivet holes. The blade has a flat and lenticular cross section with no clear midrib. A fragment of an early to middle Bronze Age copper alloy flanged or palstave axehead, comprising a 24mm long section of the butt end. The fragment is wedge shaped in side profile, with the tapering ends of parallel ridges along each side creating a characteristic H shaped cross section at the break, which is patinated and ancient.

A Bronze Age scraper made from a casually re-used primary cortical waste flake of pale brown flint. Both ends on the long axis have patches of short, semi abrupt scaled retouch to define working edges. A scraper made from a secondary flake of dark brown flint and of Bronze Age date. The distal end has a rounded projection defined by worked notches to each side which has been refined to a scraping edge with abrupt and semi abrupt sub parallel retouch. There is a pronounced bulb of percussion and striking platform at the proximal end, suggesting hard-hammered removal.

A fragment of a flange- or bar-twisted gold torc, 39.7mm in length, dating to the Middle Bronze Age (probably Penard phase) c. 1300 - 1100 BC. The torc has a x-shaped cross-section with four flanges twisted into a spiral with a circular cross-section of 6.6mm diameter. Both ends of the fragment are abraded and one appears to have been crushed. It is unclear whether the fragment has broken off from or been cut from the original torc.

A gold penannular ring of late Bronze Age date. The ring is 17.5mm in diameter and has a circular cross section of 6mm diameter, with a gap of 2mm between the flat ends. The ring appears to be solid gold rather than plated as there are no evident cracks or fracturing in the surface which would be expected from corrosion of a copper alloy core. No decorative banding is evident.
