An early to middle Bronze Age copper alloy axehead, dating to c. 1900 - 1500 BC. The blade has a crescent cutting edge with pointed terminals, the cutting edge is 48.77 mm wide. The axehead increases in thickness along the length towards the centre then tapers towards the cutting edge, creating a lozenge shaped profile and resulting in a shallow ridge across the centre. Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Derbyshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete copper alloy socketed axehead of late Bronze Age date, probably Ewart Park type (c. 1000 BC - 700 BC). The socketed axehead has a square mouth, rectangular body, flaring into a crescentic cutting edge, although damage to this cutting edge has meant the loss of the corners, with triangular shaped sides. Three evenly spaced ribs are present on the front and back faces. The ribs have a length of 32.6 mm. A side loop is present, measuring 26.0 mm in length, 10.9 mm wide and 5.6 mm thick. The mould/casting lines have not been trimmed o…

Object type: RAZOR
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper alloy 'Hallstatt' razor dating from the Lyn Fawr phase of the late Bronze Age to the early Iron Age (c. 800 - 600 BC). The razor is a concave trapezoid in plan, there are two suspension loops with a crescent shaped strengthening bar or rib beneath them, extending beyond the edges of the blade. The rib suggests this is Unterstall or Poiseul type, although lacking the decorative perforations. Undecorated razors with trapezoidal blades, such as that described in record LVPL-EE11C2 are attributed to Type Endingen (Jockenhovel 1980: 1…

Date of object: 1000 – 800 BCE (Late Bronze Age)
Dress fastener with solid, cast 'bow' or 'handle' ending in two sub-conical terminals. The terminals appear to have been raised from the joining bar or 'bow' (which is circular in cross section and tapers towards the terminal cones) by hammering (planishing) and small hammer marks are visible on the surfaces o…

The axe has a well defined, concave stop-ridge on both sides. The blade is narrow and trapezoidal, widening gently to the cutting edge. There is a shield-shaped depression below the stop, partially obscured by corrosion. A copper alloy spiral finger ring dating from the Bronze Age to middle Iron Age, (c. 1500 - 500 BC). The ring is formed from a spiral comprising one complete hoops and two partial hoops. The hoop has a sub-circular cross section, 4 mm diameter. The ring has a dark patina and patches of corrosion. The thickness, number of turns and heavy patina suggests a prehistoric date. Similar finds have been recorded on the PAS database (HAMP-7556B3, NARC-BBBD74 and SF-761FF6), with other examples in the Near Lewes hoard (SUSS-C5D042) and the Ockham hoard (SUR-B41…

An incomplete cast copper alloy socketed spearhead, of middle to late Bronze Age date (c. 1200 - 800 BC). The spear head is narrow and triangular, with a lozenge-sectioned midrib extending to the tip. The tip is bent through approximately 20 degrees, it is not possible to say if this is pre or post depositional. The other end of the spearhead terminates in an apparently old break. This reveals the midrib to be hollow, having a neat circular cavity 5 mm diameter, at least 14 mm deep, probably more but currently blocked with compacted material. The spear head is cove…

A cast copper alloy low-flanged palstave of the developed shield type, of Bronze Age date (c. 1400-1100 BC).
The palstave has a narrow butt which flares very slightly to the stop ridge. The sides then narrow slightly beyond the stop ridge before flaring into a angle-sided, wedge-shaped blade with crescent-shaped cutting edge now bearing damage in the form of chips and notches. The rear part of the axe (from the stop ridge to the butt) is sub-rectangular in plan, and the side flanges of the butt are leaf-shaped, tapering from the stop ridge to the e…

A fragment of a socketed axe of the late Bronze Age, dating c.1100-800 BC. The fragment comprises the cutting edge, blade, blade tips and just the lower portion (approx 11 mm) of the body.
The cutting edge is crescent shaped, the blade flares out to the tips. The casting seams on the sides of the axehead have not been worked down and remain fairly prominent, there is little sign of overall wear on the blade. The body is sub rectangular in section, as is the internal socket end. The whole object has a well formed, dark brown patina. Although it is difficult to determine from a fra…

An incomplete copper-alloy looped, socketed axehead dating from the Late Bronze Age to the Early Iron Age c. 800 - 700 BC. The mouth of the axe-head has a prominent collar and indicates a rectangular shape with rounded edges, however only half the mouth remains, in addition to the single loop. To the side of the loop runs a longitudinal ridge with a darker green fill; this appears to be a casting fault, and a possible attempt at fixing the break: though this appears to be an old mend, it has not been established whether or not this feature is the result of recent intervention. County: Derbyshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment of a copper alloy bladed object, probably a rapier or dirk, but possibly a spearhead, of middle Bronze Age date, c 1500 - 1200 BC.
The blade fragment tapers in width from 26 mm to 20 mm, both ends terminating in old breaks, the blade has a lenticular cross section, with a longitudinal central ridge, slightly flattened.
There is a slight curvature to fragment which may be suggestive of deliberate damage.
Overall length 50 mm, thickness 3.7 mm at centre, tapering to 0.9 mm at the edge. Weight 16.8g
