Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete Bronze Age to Medieval copper alloy awl, dating to c.1250 BC-AD 1500. It is incomplete because there is a small early break at one end. It is a long slim oval in form, but slightly wider towards one end than the other, sub oval in cross section with flatter sides. One end is pointed, the other probably also originally pointed but now jagged at the break. Both flatter sides have a wide longitudinal groove which echoes the overall shape, more pronounced on one side than the other. Close to the break there is a chunk missing from the edge …

A fragment of copper alloy in two parts of uncertain date or purpose. It may be a ferrule and may be Bronze Age to Post Medieval in date. Fragment 1 is curved, sub-circular in cross section and has an almost solid core, although a separate, thin central core is in evidence, which can just be seen at each end of the find. This also appears to be of copper alloy. The find has a pale green patina and some corrosion products adhering to it. Fragment 2 is similar in shape, although it is a shorter fragment, has a solid core, but does not have the separate thin central core of…

Object type: SPEARHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment of a Middle to Late Bronze Age copper alloy spear head probably dating to c. 1550-800 BC. The fragment consists of the point of the blade. It is sub-triangular in plan, with a circular sectioned mid-rib, from which project the wings of the blade. These taper in section into the point. The rest of the spearhead is lost to an old break.
Length: 34.4mm; Width: 11.2mm; Thickness: 6.8mm; Weight: 5.37g
Precise typological classification is difficult considering the fragmentary nature of the object, however its form would suggest a Middle or Late Bronze Age date.

Dimensions: 51.2mm in length; 6.9 mm in width; 6.89g in weight.
While many copper alloy awls are known from the Bronze Age, it is difficult to be confident about this particular item given that the shape of awls changed little over time. Therefore a Late Bronze Age to Medieval date is given (c. 1250 BC - AD 1500).

An incomplete, small, copper alloy blade dating to the Middle to Late Bronze Age c.1400 to 750 BC. Possibly cut down from a larger blade such as a dirk. The blade is tapering and rounded at both ends. It has flattened cutting edges along both sides and a low central ridge. Two thirds of the way along each side are two semi-circular incisions symmetrically mirroring one another, possibly used as an attachment site. At one end of the blade the edges taper in to a narrow break, where a possible tang may have extended out. The other end is rounded.

A complete copper alloy awl of unknown date from Bronze Age to Medieval (1250 BC- AD 1500). The awl is square in cross section except for the blunt points at either end. It is in good condition and has no distinguishing marks. It has a grey green patina.
Measurements: Length 6.1mm, width: 4.4 and weight 5.17grams.
Introduced in the Bronze Age awls have barely changed over the centuries and this makes them difficult to date precisely. As this awl is very regular it would suggest that it is of a later date. They are used as leather an…
