Fragment of copper-alloy rib-bladed ?side-looped ?spearhead. The fragment is from the lower part of the blade, and retains part of the midrib/socket. The blade is basically flat, but has a curving rib on both faces which runs roughly parallel to the blade edge, about a third of the way from the edge to the midrib. Deep brown patina. The breaks (paler green/brown) are not recent but are probably not ancient. Surviving length 46 mm, weight 17.0g. The curving rib is unusual. It is likely that it derives from the straight ribs on the Irish kite-shaped side-looped spearheads of the early Mi…

Neither terminal looks broken - thus object is complete. Ribbon is extremely tangled, but it would seem that intermediate narrowing is roughly central. The 'bar' thus created is currently tightly curved but may not have originally been so. Terminal 2 has flat section leading straight out of ribbon; no.1 is more rectangular and involves a half twist, its faces having sprung from the sides of the ribbon! No real sign of original twisting of ribbon - despite the extensive buckling there seems to be no 'extra-length' along the edges relative to the centre-line. Probably a bracelet, given …

Object type: FLAT AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Bronze flat axe, unworn and in very fresh condition. It is pointed oval in its longitudinal section tapering from the centre to either end, and curving a little more towards the relatively wide and splayed cutting edge creating a very slight ridge c.22mm before it. The butt-end tapers to a thin but blunt edge. The cutting edge has suffered very minor damage and is still relatively sharp, with slight recent damage on one side. The sides of the axe are evenly curved and concave, flaring at the cutting end so that the blade curves slightly upwards at each corner, and tapering towards the …

Object type: CHISEL
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Late Bronze Age chisel, length 94mm, surface heavily pitted. The chiselling end is thin, flat and slightly broken through wear. It gently tapers for c.30mm, when it flares outwards to create a shoulder. From here it tapers inwards again to a very sharp point which would have been encased in a wooden handle. The pitted surface is probably a casting occurrence as the level of corrosion apparent down one side of the object would appear all over the object if the pitting were due to corrosion. This also suggests the object was not finished. Max thickness 4mm, width of chiselling end 9mm.

Object type: DIRK
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Fragment of dirk or dagger, too fragmented to tell exactly, though size suggests its length was not more than about 120mm long. Raised mid-rib with a line either side following the line of the blade. On the other side of this line the blade slopes away to give a smooth pointed-oval cross-section. It seems the butt was probably quite pronounced as the line of the blade on one side suddenly curves more sharply as though toward a trapezoidal butt. This is typical for the dirk, though a sharp curve at the butt is not unheard of in the dagger (Wessex Daggers, Armorico-British C -though t…

Indented socketed axe with (initially) side loop. The semi-circular indentations in the sides are accentuated by raised plates creating a waist. The cutting edge is badly worn. The object is very small and perhaps more like a chisel. However, other very similar objects (see ref. below) are axeheads.

Object type: SPEARHEAD

Workflow stage: Published Find published
Fragment of probable spearhead. Diamond-shaped in section. Edges worn. Although the size suggests this is the tip of a spear and not some larger weapon, there is not enough of the object surviving to be certain. If a spearhead fragment, it is probably of the Rapier Type, Class IVa. It is unlikely to be the tip of a dagger or sword, though could just possibly be from a very narrow rapier (Type IV variant Stretham or Cornacarrow).

Early Bronze Age short-flanged axe of Kirtomy type, with parallel and high flanges hammered or bent over on each side to contain the (no longer existent haft). Hammer marks are clearly visible. The blade is triangular with a slight curve outwards at the edge. Rounded butt, shallow stop and almost imperceptible on one side due to corrosion/ organic matter. Although surface corrosion and battered edge, still in fairly robust condition.

Shaft and part of loop from 'quoit-headed pin'. The slightly bent shaft is of circular section near the tip, broadening to a relatively flat section near the loop. Only about one-third of the loop remains. It appears to have a flat cross-section (there are no obvious traces of flanges). The original diameter of the loop is likely to have been about 19 mm internally and 28 mm externally. The surviving length of the pin is 77 mm and the original length would have been perhaps c. 93 mm. The surface is patinated dark brown but has numerous pale green pockets of invasive corrosion. The bre…

A complete late Bronze Age socketed axehead. Double mouth moulding, of which the upper is more prominent while the lower gives rise to a loop at the side of the body. Descending from the lower moulding are four raised ribs in two groups of two separated by an 8mm gap in the centre. The two outermost ribs on either face emphasise the angles of a rectangular-sectioned body. The two inner ribs curve gently and then more steeply to join the outer ribs at a point ¾ of the way down the body. Double mouth moulding, of which the upper is more prominent while the lower gives rise to a loop at the side of the body. Descending from the lower moulding are (probably) four raised ribs in two groups of two separated by a 5mm gap in the centre. The two outermost ribs on either face seem to emphasise the angles of a rectangular-sectioned body but are not obviously there as 1 & 2 are (possibly as they are obscured by corrosion, or because the metal itself seems to have expanded and obscured the ribs). With the loop to the left, the two inner ribs fall steeply and close together sudd…
